The invented optical chamber is sealed and encapsulated by a transparent element, a connection element and a transparent substrate or another transparent element. The optical chamber is filled with a transparent fluid and equipped with an electronic sensing and execution component. The surface state, the position and the inclination of the optical chamber are adjusted by the electronic sensing and execution component or through a movable part of the connection element, thereby adjusting the output direction and the focal length of the light beam. The optical chambers are combined in series or in array to constitute an operational solar concentrator adapted to output more than one controlled convergent light beam or a directional light beam to support various light energy applications, such as long-distance lighting, heating, light energy and signal transmission, increased electric energy production, and weather control. The invention is provided to adjust the internal temperature and pressure to adapt to extremely high power and extreme environments. Biotechnology is useful for obtaining the same structure and function.

A heliostat includes a reflecting surface; an elastically deformable frame on which the reflecting surface is mounted; a truss structure behind the elastically deformable frame that includes at least four bracing struts with first ends attached to the elastically deformable frame and second ends attached to at least one node located centrally behind the frame; at least one actuator connected to at least one of the at least four struts at the at least one node; an electronic control system configured to communicate with the least one actuator; and a dual-axis mount to support and orient the above assembly. The actuation of the at least one actuator in response to the electronic control system causes compression or tension of at least one of the at least four bracing struts to thereby control a shape of the reflecting surface and the elastically deformable frame in at least low order bending modes.

An extremely low cost solar concentrator made of membranes or films is inflated into a Compound Parabolic Concentrator (CPC) a non-image concentrator. The portion of the inflatable concentrator, which is shaped into a CPC concentrator, is formed with reflective membranes or films, and the portions of the inflatable concentrator on the top of CPC and on the bottom of the concentrator are made of clear membranes or films. The incident light including parallel rays of light and diffuse light, as long as falling into the half acceptance angle of the CPC, will be concentrated to the bottom exit aperture of the CPC. Therefore, this type concentrator reduces the requirement to the accuracy of tracking for concentration. In addition, this type of concentrator demonstrates more tolerance to shape distortion for concentration than imaging system.

The preferred embodiment will permit every panel in series to be moved in unison using two main cables. This apparatus is further designed to track the sun along two-axes-both side-to-side and up-and-down-while maintaining constant tension on these cables throughout all degrees of freedom permitted by design. The apparatus also permits each mirror to be focused independently on a smaller target by means of mirror warping.

Since a curtain-type reflecting surface able to expanded or retract is used, not only can the sun be tracked but also the curtain-type reflecting surface can be expanded or retracted according to the strength of wind power.
