An arrayed waveguide grating device includes an input coupler configured to receive a light signal and split the light signal into a plurality of output light signals. The device also includes a plurality of waveguides optically connected to the input coupler, each waveguide having a plurality of waveguide portions having respective sensitivities to variance in one or more parameters associated with operating of the optical arrayed grating device. Lengths of the respective portions are determined such that each waveguide applies a respective phase shift to the output light signal that propagates through the waveguide and the plurality of waveguides have at least substantially same change in phase shift with respective changes in the one or more parameters associated with operation of the device. An output coupler is optically connected to the plurality of waveguides to map respective light signals output from the plurality of waveguides to respective focal positions.

A temperature compensation method for wavelength monitoring using spectrometers on photonic integrated chips and a related temperature-compensated wavelength monitoring device include an optical filter of the chip filters a source signal to provide at least one spectral reference line to a first spectrometer to detect thermal wavelength drifts thereof. At least one spectral line to be monitored is received by the same or another spectrometer of the chip to detect wavelength shifts thereof. The detected thermal drift of the reference line is compared to calibrated thermal drifts for the reference line which is associated with a calibrated thermal drift for the spectral response curve of the spectrometer receiving the spectral line to be monitored. A thermal drift rate for the response curve of the optical filter differs from a thermal drift rate for the response curve of the first spectrometer at least by an amount.

The method further includes comparing the infrared radiation level to a radiation level setpoint for the optical fiber to determine a radiation level error value. The method further includes adjusting a power level setpoint of the heat source based on the radiation level error value.

Photonics packaging method and device

Photonic packages are described. One such photonic package includes a photonic chip, an application specific integrated circuit, and optionally, an interposer. The photonic chip includes photonic microelectromechanical system (MEMS) devices. A photonic package may include a material layer patterned to include recesses. The recesses are aligned with the photonic MEMS devices so as to form enclosed cavities around the photonic MEMS devices. This arrangement preserves the integrity of the photonic MEMS devices.

The present invention provides three waveguide structures, including a protruding-type waveguide structure, a buried-type waveguide structure, and a redeposited-type waveguide structure, the protruding-type waveguide structure includes two axisymmetrically disposed first ends, and the first end is sequentially divided into a first region, a second region, and a third region in a direction toward an axis of symmetry; and the waveguide structure includes a first silicon substrate layer, a second silicon substrate layer, a first silicon dioxide layer, a second silicon dioxide layer, and a first silicon waveguide layer. The waveguide structure and the waveguide coupling structure that are provided in the present invention have advantages of a small size, low polarization dependence, and low temperature sensitivity, and a crosstalk value is greater than 25 dB, which meets a requirement of a passive optical network system, and provides feasibility for commercialization of the arrayed waveguide grating.

Reconfigurable athermal optical filters

An apparatus comprising an optical filter located on a substrate. The optical filter including an optical splitter configured to receive an input light and an interferometer having two waveguide arms having different optical path-lengths from each other. The waveguide arms configured to receive the input light from the optical splitter. At least a portion of one of the two waveguide arms has a narrower core width than a wider core width of the other waveguide arm. The waveguide arm with the longest waveguide portion having the narrower core width has the longest total physical path-length of the two waveguide arms. At least one of the two waveguide arms having a set of discrete waveguide portions, the discrete waveguide portions of the set being connected by optical switches which are configured to tunably select from a plurality of different physical path-lengths through the discrete waveguide portions of the at least one waveguide arm.

Integrated optical multiplexer / demultiplexer with thermal compensation

Photonic integrated circuits utilizing interferometric effects, such as wavelength multiplexers/demultiplexers, include a free-space coupling region having two core layers that have thermo-optic coefficients of opposite sign. The two core layers are configured to provide athermal or nearly-athermal operation. Described examples include integrated array waveguide grating devices and integrated echelle grating devices. Example material systems include LNOI and SOI.

TEMPERATURE-STABILIZED INTEGRATED WAVEGUIDES

Embodiments include a photonic device with a compensation structure. The photonic device includes a waveguide with a refractive index which changes according to the thermo-optic effect as a temperature of the photonic device fluctuates. The compensation structure is positioned on the photonic device to counteract or otherwise alter the thermo-optic effect on the refractive index of the waveguide in order to prevent malfunctions of the photonic device.
