An optical package for providing efficient coupling between a photonic device and a silicon photonic integrated-circuit chip (Si PIC) edge couplers with low return loss, as well as variations thereof, is described. The optical package may include a photonic device, a Si PIC, a single mode fiber or fiber array assembly, a lens and a spacer. The Si PIC may an input edge coupler and an output edge coupler. The single mode fiber or fiber array assembly may be aligned to the output edge coupler. The lens may be disposed between the photonic device and the input edge coupler, and may be configured to minimize a mismatch between an output spot size of the photonic device and a spot size of the input edge coupler of the Si PIC. The spacer may be bonded to a facet of the input edge coupler with an index matching fluid.

A light emitting device includes a light source and a waveguide structure. The light source emits light having a directionality. The waveguide structure includes an optical waveguide and an exterior part. The optical waveguide has an incident end surface and an emission end surface, converts a wavelength of the light incident from the incident end surface, and emits the light from the emission end surface. The exterior part is optically transparent and covers the optical waveguide such that the incident end surface and the emission end surface are exposed from the exterior part. The optical waveguide is elongated in a length direction. The length direction of the optical waveguide is inclined at a predetermined angle with respect to an optical axis of the light in a predetermined plane including the length direction of the optical waveguide and the optical axis of the light. The predetermined angle is set to allow the light to propagate in the optical waveguide with total internal reflection at a boundary surface between the optical waveguide and the exterior part.

Photodetector with sequential asymmetric-width waveguides

Described are various configurations of optical structures having asymmetric-width waveguides. A photodetector can include parallel waveguides that have different widths, which can be connected via passive waveguide. One or more light absorbing regions can be proximate to the waveguides to absorb light propagating through one or more of the parallel waveguides. Multiple photodetectors having asymmetric width waveguides can operate to transduce light in different modes in a polarization diversity optical receiver.
