Optical fiber cladding light stripper
Multi-clad optical fiber cladding light stripper (CLS) comprising an inner cladding with one or more recessed surface regions to remove light propagating within the inner cladding. A CLS may comprise such recessed surface regions along two or more azimuthal angles about the fiber axis, for example to improve stripping efficiency. One or more dimensions, or spatial distribution, of the recessed surface regions may be randomized, for example to improve stripping uniformity across a multiplicity of modes propagating within a cladding. Adjacent recessed surface regions may abut, for example, end-to-end, as segments of a recess that occupies a majority, or even an entirety, of the length of a fiber surrounded by a heat sink. One or more dimensions, or angular position, of individual ones of the abutted recessed surface regions may vary, according to a regular or irregular pattern.

Backlit Displays with Bent Light Guide Layers
A display such as a liquid crystal display may have an array of pixels that is illuminated using backlight illumination from a backlight. The backlight may have a light guide layer that distributes light from light-emitting diodes across the display. The light guide layer may have a planar portion that provides backlight illumination to the array of pixels and may have bent edge portions that curve out of the plane of the planar portion. Light scattering structures may be formed in the planar portion to extract backlight illumination from the light guide layer. A light sensor adjacent to the bent portion may monitor leaked light. The light guide layer may have two bent portions on opposing edges of the light guide layer.

Resonant fiber optic beam manipulator
A graded index fiber having a refractive index profile that causes a beam to be re-imaged in the graded index fiber with a regular period may include a set of bends that have a bend period matched to or nearly matched to a pitch of the graded index fiber. For example, the set of bends may be formed in the graded index fiber using one or more bending devices that include one or more protrusions that have a periodicity matched to or nearly matched to a pitch of the graded index fiber. A first section of the one or more bending devices may be actuated to move towards a second section of the one or more bending devices such that the one or more protrusions cause the bends to be formed in the graded index fiber.
OPTICAL DEVICE, TERMINATOR, WAVELENGTH-TUNABLE LASER DEVICE, AND METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING OPTICAL DEVICE
An optical device capable of suppressing a reflected light at an end of an optical waveguide regardless of the width of the optical waveguide is provided. An optical device includes an optical waveguide and a terminator. The optical waveguide is formed on a substrate. The terminator is formed on the substrate in such a way that the terminator is connected to one end of the optical waveguide, includes a curved optical waveguide having such a curvature that it causes a bending loss in an input light input from the optical waveguide, the input light decaying as it propagates through the curved optical waveguide.
