A device includes an operating portion, a switch and a controller. The device is operable in a first mode in which a predetermined operation is executed and in a second mode of which power consumption is reduced rather than in the first mode, and operates in a state connected to an image forming apparatus. The operating portion operates by an AC voltage supplied from an external power source. The switch supplies the AC voltage to the operating portion in a conductive state and cuts off supply of the AC voltage to the operating portion in a non-conductive state. The controller operates by a DC voltage generated from the AC voltage by a power source provided in the image forming apparatus. The controller controls to cause the switch to be in the non-conductive state so as to stop operation of the operating portion when the device shifts from the first mode to the second mode.

Upon receiving a resumption notification from a system controller, a printer driver determines whether a power supply to a printer apparatus has stopped/resumed after a previous transition instruction to a sleep state was transmitted to the printer apparatus. If stop/resumption is not performed, an initialization negotiation processing performed to the printer apparatus when stop/resumption is not performed.

PREPARATION OPERATION FOR IMAGE FORMING APPARATUS

An image forming apparatus performs a first preparation operation in a full color mode when power is supplied. The apparatus performs, when an image formation request is inputted after the first preparation operation completes, a second preparation operation in a designated color mode in accordance with the image formation request. When an image formation request is inputted during the first preparation operation, the apparatus skips the second preparation operation and performs image formation after the first preparation operation completes.

A image forming apparatus includes a power control unit, an operation mode control unit, and a first timer. The power control unit performs control so as to switch between a normal power state for supplying the operation power supply voltage to the image forming unit, a first power saving state for not supplying the operation power supply voltage to the image forming unit, and a second power saving state having less power consumption than the first power saving state. The operation mode control unit performs control so as to switch a normal mode corresponding to a normal power state, a first power saving mode corresponding to a first power saving state, and a second power saving mode corresponding to a second power saving state.

An image forming apparatus dynamically determines the next communication timing with a server to thereby increase a power saving effect by preventing unnecessary release of the power saving state. The image forming apparatus having a first power state and a second power state in which power is saved more than in the first power state, and having a plurality of functions of periodically communicating with an external apparatus. A remaining time before the image forming apparatus next communicates with the external apparatus is calculated for each of the plurality of functions of periodically communicating with the external apparatus. There is set, in a timer, the shortest one from among the calculated plurality of remaining times. A power state of the image forming apparatus transits from the second power state to the first power state according to the remaining time set in the timer.
