Reader Bias Based Locking Technique Enabling High Read Concurrency For Read-Mostly Workloads
20200411049 · 2020-12-31 ·

A data object has a lock and a condition indicator associated with it. Based at least partly on detecting a first setting of the condition indicator, a reader stores an indication that the reader has obtained read access to the data object in an element of a readers structure and reads the data object without acquiring the lock. A writer detects the first setting and replaces it with a second setting, indicating that the lock is to be acquired by readers before reading the data object. Prior to performing a write on the data object, the writer verifies that one or more elements of the readers structure have been cleared.

A reader of a set of data accessors that includes readers and writer detects that a particular lock of a first collection of non-global locks associated with a data object of a computing environment is held by another accessor. After checking a blocking indicator, the reader uses a second lock (which is not part of the first collection) to obtain read access to the data object and implements its reads without acquiring the particular lock. Prior to implementing a write on the data object, a writer acquires at least some locks of the first collection, and sets the blocking indicator to prevent readers from using the second lock to obtain read access to the data object.

Changing bit spacing for selected symbols written to a magnetic recording medium

A set of patterns written to a magnetic recording medium are found that result in a relatively high and/or low error when read back. Upon writing subsequent to the determining of the set of patterns, one pattern of the set of the patterns is identified within a data segment ready to be written to the magnetic recording medium. The data segment is written with a changed bit spacing in response to identifying that the one pattern of the set of the patterns is within the data segment.

Laser current calibration using preamplifier

Systems and methods of laser bias calibration are presented. A preamplifier circuit may configure a laser current supplied to a laser emitter to be a first laser current of the plurality of laser currents during the writing of one or more first sectors. The preamplifier may further detect one or more gaps in a write power signal while the laser current of the laser emitter is configured to be the first laser current. In response to the detection of the one or more gaps in the write power signal, the preamplifier may configure the laser current supplied to the laser emitter to be a second laser current of the plurality of laser currents during the writing of one or more second sectors. The preamplifier circuit may be utilized in a heat assisted magnetic recording device.

MANAGING FAR AND NEAR TRACK ERASURE BY DYNAMIC CONTROL OF A WRITE CURRENT PARAMETER OF A MAGNETIC DISK DRIVE

A method may include causing a write head of a magnetic data storage drive to write a first portion of data to a magnetic data storage device of the magnetic data storage drive based at least in part on a first value of at least one parameter of a write current. The method may include updating a value of a write counter and determining whether the value of the write counter is greater than or equal to a threshold write count. The method may also include adjusting the at least one parameter of the write current to a second, different value. The method may further include causing the write head to write a second portion of data to the magnetic data storage device based at least in part on the second value of the at least one parameter of the write current.
