Spectrally combined fiber laser amplifier system and method
A method for providing spectral beam combining (SBC) including generating a plurality seed beams each having a central wavelength and a low fill factor profile, where the wavelength of all of the seed beams is different; amplifying the seed beams; causing the amplified beams to expand as they propagate so as to be converted from the low fill factor profile to a high fill factor profile where the high fill factor profile tapers to a lower value at a perimeter of each beam; causing a wavefront of the converted beams to flatten to provide a plurality of adjacent SBC beams having different wavelengths with minimal overlap and a minimal gap between the beams; collimating the SBC beams; and directing the collimated SBC beams onto an SBC element that spatially diffracts the individual beam wavelengths and directing the beams in the same direction as a combined output beam.
OPTICAL AMPLIFIER AND OPTICAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEM
An optical amplifier includes one or more rare earth element-doped optical fibers each including one or more cores, two or more excitation light sources per single core of the one or more rare earth element-doped optical fibers, configured to emit excitation light for exciting a rare earth element added to the one or more rare earth element-doped optical fibers according to a driving current, and a synthesizing part configured to synthesize the excitation light emitted from the two or more excitation light sources per single core. Two or more cores are provided in total, and the excitation light emitted from the two or more excitation light sources per single core is synthesized and input with respect to each core.
LIGHT AMPLIFICATION DEVICE, LIGHT TRANSMISSION SYSTEM, AND LIGHT AMPLIFICATION METHOD
Light amplification devices using coupled multi-core optical fibers have a figure of merit that temporally varies, which makes it difficult to perform performance evaluation and to build a light transmission system using the same. Accordingly, a light amplification device of the present invention comprises: a band control means that controls the wavelength band of a light carrier to generate a band control light; and a band control light amplification means that has a plurality of light amplification media through which the band control light propagates, wherein the band control light amplification means amplifies the band control light in a coupled state in which the light propagating through the plurality of light amplification media induces a crosstalk and wherein the band control means controls the wavelength band such that the band control light having propagated through the plurality of light amplification media has a reduced coherence.
Broadband Tm-doped optical fiber amplifier
A broadband optical amplifier for operation in the 2 μm visible wavelength band is based upon a single-clad Tm-doped fiber amplifier (TDFA). A compact pump source uses a combination of low-power laser diode with a fiber laser to provide a multi-watt pump beam without needing to include thermal management and/or pump wavelength stability components. The broadband optical amplifier is therefore able to be relatively compact device with fiber coupled output powers of >0.5 W CW, high small signal gain, low noise figure, and large OSNR, important for use as a versatile wideband preamplifier or power booster amplifier.
Broadband Ho-doped optical fiber amplifier
A broadband optical amplifier for operation in the 2 μm visible wavelength band is based upon a single-clad Ho-doped fiber amplifier (HDFA). A compact pump source uses a combination of discrete laser diode with a fiber laser (which may be a dual-stage fiber laser) to create a pump output beam at a wavelength associated with creating gain in the presence of Ho ions (an exemplary pump wavelength being 1940 nm). The broadband optical amplifier may take the form of a single stage amplifier or a multi-stage amplifier, and may utilize a co-propagating pump and/or a counter-propagating pump arrangement.
Tm-doped fiber amplifier utilizing wavelength conditioning for broadband performance
A multi-stage thulium-doped (Tm-doped) fiber amplifiers (TDFA) is based on the use of single-clad Tm-doped optical fiber and includes a wavelength conditioning element to compensate for the nonuniform spectral response of the initial stage(s) prior to providing power boosting in the output stage. The wavelength conditioning element, which may comprise a gain shaping filter, exhibits a wavelength-dependent response that flattens the gain profile and output power distribution of the amplified signal prior to reaching the output stage of the multi-stage TDFA. The inclusion of the wavelength conditioning element allows the operating bandwidth of the amplifier to be extended so as to encompass a large portion of the eye-safe 2 μm wavelength region.
PHOTONIC DEVICE
A photonic device is configured with a photonic integrated circuit (PIC), a plurality of fiber-based gain mediums in optical communication with the PIC, and at least one optical pump outputting pump light coupled into two or more gain mediums. At least one of the fiber-based gain media and the PIC form a hybrid resonant optical cavity there between operative to lase light into the PIC. The gain media further include one or more fiber amplifiers amplifying light signals coupled into and decoupled from the PIC. The photonic device is integrated with Si photonic passive and active photonic elements, while ail fiber links between the gain media and PIC are free from these elements.
Integrated Optical Switch Having Doped Fiber/Waveguide Amplifiers Packaged in A Transposer
The disclosure addresses the problem of increased optical insertion losses in integrated optical switches. It enables the implementation of an array of optical amplifiers, typically with low/moderate gain, to compensate for optical insertion losses in the integrated switches. The amplifier is based on a doped optical fiber which is optically pumped by a pump laser. The integrated optical switch includes a transposer that facilitates connectivity between a set of fibers and a photonic chip through an optical mode conversion. An all passive circuitry is built in a doped fiber amplifier, WDM couplers combine/separate the signals from the pump, and splitters allow sharing of a single pump by multiple amplifiers. In addition, switch pigtails are implemented with the doped fiber.
