Electric machine fault detection scheme

A short circuit detection system and method that identifies a short circuit between turns of a winding of a permanent magnet machine having a three-phase winding in response to detection of imbalances between the three motor phases at an instant in time. The imbalances are identified by monitoring motor terminal voltages and currents.

METHOD FOR MANAGING OVERCURRENT PROTECTION IN A SELF-CONTROLLED SYNCHRONOUS MACHINE WITH PERMANENT MAGNETS OF A MOTOR VEHICLE
20220345069 · 2022-10-27 ·

A method for managing overcurrent protection in a self-controlled permanent-magnet synchronous motor of a motor vehicle is disclosed. The method makes it possible to adjust the activation threshold for overcurrent protection in the synchronous motor. In particular, the activation threshold is variable and depends, inter alia, on parameters representative of the temperature of the components of the synchronous motor.

Electric traction system for a railway vehicle and protection method realized by such a system

A system includes a converter for powering a synchronous electric machine to which it is connected by cables, an insulating device and a mechanism for short-circuiting phases of the machine. The system includes primary detectors for detecting an overcurrent in the converter and a securing device able to open the insulating device when receiving a primary detection signal emitted by the primary detector. The system also includes secondary detectors able to detect a short-circuit downstream from the insulating device and to emit a secondary detection signal toward the securing device, the latter actuating the closing of the mechanism for short-circuiting as long as they have already received a primary detection signal having led to the opening of the insulating device.

Controller and a Method to Drive an Inverter Circuit for a Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Motor

A controller is provided to drive an inverter circuit for a PMSM. The inverter circuit is connected to a battery through a DC link capacitor, and is driven in one safe state during a fault condition. The controller monitors at least one parameter with respective threshold value to drive the inverter circuit in one safe state comprising an active Short Circuit (SC) and a Freewheel (FW). While in FW state, the controller switches from the FW state to the SC state if the at least one parameter is above the respective threshold. While in SC state, the controller controls engine speed to bring the PMSM to a predetermined speed when the stator temperature is more than a threshold temperature value. The controller switches from the SC state to the FW state.

FAULT SHUTDOWN CONTROL OF AN ELECTRIC MACHINE IN A VEHICLE OR OTHER DC-POWERED TORQUE SYSTEM

A torque system includes a DC power device, a polyphase electric machine, a contactor pair, a power inverter module (PIM), and a controller. The PIM connects to the power device via the contactor pair and directly connects to the electric machine. The controller executes a method to control a fault response under a fault condition resulting in opening of the contactor pair and a polyphase short condition. The controller calculates a back EMF of the electric machine and transmits switching control signals to semiconductor switches of the PIM to transition from the polyphase short condition to a polyphase open condition only when the calculated back EMF is less than a calibrated value and a voltage rise on a DC side of the PIM is less than a calibrated voltage rise. A vehicle includes the DC power device, road wheels, electric machine, PIM, and controller.

SYNCHRONOUS MACHINE CONTROLLER

When a failure of current detection parts occurs while a synchronous machine is operating, the failure of the current detection parts is detected and the operation of the synchronous machine is continued. An open-loop control part for performing control without using the detected current values of the current detection parts and a closed-loop control part for performing control using the detected current values are included, and a failure of the current detection parts is detected while the open-loop control part is operating.
