Recovering from hard decoding errors by remapping log likelihood ratio values read from NAND memory cells
Hard errors are determined for an unsuccessful decoding of codeword bits read from NAND memory cells via a read channel and input to a low-density parity check (LDPC) decoder. A bit error rate (BER) for the hard errors is estimated and BER for the read channel is estimated. Hard error regions are found using a single level cell (SLC) reading of the NAND memory cells. A log likelihood ratio (LLR) mapping of the codeword bits input to the LDPC decoder is changed based on the hard error regions, the hard error BER, and/or the read channel BER.

A decoding method for low density parity code is provided. The method includes performing an iterative decoding operation for a codeword, wherein a plurality of Log-Likelihood-Ratios correspond respectively to a plurality of data bits of the codeword; determining whether the iterative decoding operation is successful; determining whether a perturbation condition is met if the iterative decoding operation is not successful; performing protect operation for a first Log-Likelihood-Ratio among the Log-Likelihood-Ratios, and performing a perturbation operation for a plurality of second Log-Likelihood-Ratios among the Log-Likelihood-Ratios, wherein the second Log-Likelihood-Ratios are different to the first Log-Likelihood-Ratio; and re-performing the iterative decoding operation for the codeword after finishing the perturbation operation.
ADAPTIVE READ THRESHOLD VOLTAGE TRACKING WITH BIT ERROR RATE ESTIMATION BASED ON NON-LINEAR SYNDROME WEIGHT MAPPING
Adaptive read threshold voltage tracking techniques are provided that employ bit error rate estimation based on a non-linear syndrome weight mapping. An exemplary device comprises a controller configured to determine a bit error rate for at least one of a plurality of read threshold voltages in a memory using a non-linear mapping of a syndrome weight to the bit error rate for the at least one of the plurality of read threshold voltages.
REDUCED-POWER IMPLEMENTATION OF ERROR-CORRECTION PROCESSING
A low-density parity-check (LDPC) decoder comprising a pre-processor, a core decoder, and a post-processor. The pre-processor is configured to transform a received log-likelihood-ratio (LLR) sequence into a form that enables the core decoder to toggle at a reduced rate during iterative decoding processing thereof. Upon stoppage of the decoding processing corresponding to the LLR sequence, the post-processor operates to apply a complementary transformation to the output of the core decoder, which recovers the corresponding codeword of the LDPC code. An example embodiment of the LDPC decoder operating in this manner may be able to beneficially reduce the power consumption therein by about 10%.
Adjustable read retry order based on decoding success trend
Methods, systems, and media for decoding data are described. A sequence of read-level voltages for decoding operations may be determined based on a trend of decoding success indicators, including a first decoding success indicator and a second decoding success indicator. The first decoding success indicator is obtained from a more recent successful decoding operation. The first one of the sequence may be set to a read-level voltage of the first decoding success indicator. If the read-level voltage of the first decoding success indicator is less than a read-level voltage of the second decoding success indicator, then the trend is decreasing, and the second one of the sequence may be set to a read-level voltage less than that of the first one of the sequence. After executing one or more decoding operations, the decoding success indicators may be updated based on the read-level voltage of the current successful decoding operation.
ERROR CORRECTION CODE SYSTEM WITH AUGMENTED DETECTION FEATURES
Various embodiments include an error correction code (ECC) system that provides protection against various errors in addition to data bit errors. In general, ECC codes protect against data bit errors, where one or more data bits in a data word contain the wrong value. The ECC code is based on the original data bits, such that a data bit error results in a data word that is inconsistent with the ECC code generated for and stored with the data word. The present embodiments generate ECC codes based on address information and/or sequencing information in addition to the data bits in the data word. As a result, the present embodiments detect bit errors in this address information and/or sequencing information. Such errors include write address decoding errors, read address decoding errors, write enable errors, and stale data errors.
Application of low-density parity-check codes with codeword segmentation
A low-density parity-check (LDPC) decoder performs check node computations as N different segments of the check nodes which have connections only to a codeword segment of length C/N bits as well as check nodes that have connections across the entire codeword of length C. The decoder can include a controller or other compute hardware to decode the codeword, including to perform computations for separate segments of C/N bits of the codeword. The system can perform computations including adjustment of the decode computations based on an expected error rate for selected segments of the codeword.
Retransmission Softbit Decoding
Disclosed are methods and systems for using softbit decoding techniques in retransmission-based networks for error concealment of packets corrupted by bit-errors. The softbit decoding techniques derive softbit information from multiple corrupted hardbits of the retransmitted packet to aid a softbit decoder in decoding the packet. The approach realizes improved error concealment capability while maintaining a simple system architecture. A retransmission softbit module is inserted between a channel decoder used for channel-decoding and demodulating a compressed packet and the softbit decoder. The retransmission softbit module may derive an accumulated softbit packet from multiple corrupted copies of the packet received from the channel decoder, make bit decisions based on the accumulated softbit packet, and derive reliability information for the bit decisions. The bit decisions may be a majority decision packet (MDP) created using a majority voting scheme. The reliability information and the MDP may be provided to the softbit decoder for decoding.

A memory controller includes an interface and a processor. The interface communicates with a plurality of memory cells, and an individual one of the plurality of memory cells stores data in multiple predefined programming levels. The processor is configured to read an Error Correction Code (ECC) code word from a group of memory cells, via the interface, using multiple read thresholds positioned between adjacent programming levels, for producing multiple readouts that contain respective numbers of errors, to derive from the code word a reference readout that contains no errors, or contains a number of errors smaller than in the code word, to calculate multiple distances between the reference readout and the respective readouts, and set a preferred read threshold based on the calculated distances, and to perform subsequent read operations for retrieving data from the plurality of memory cells, using the preferred read threshold.
