ADJUSTING EYE HEIGHTS AND OPTICAL POWER LEVELS OF A MULTI-LEVEL OPTICAL SIGNAL
A multi-level optical signal is sampled to generate an eye diagram. The signal can be adjusted when eyes in the eye diagram have different heights. More specifically, a first value is determined, and the height of a first eye is adjusted using the first value. The first value is multiplied by a stored factor to produce a second value, and the height of a second eye is adjusted using the second value, and so on for other eyes. As a result, eye heights are the same. Similarly, optical power levels of the signal can be adjusted when the levels are not equally spaced. As a result, the optical power levels are equally spaced.

LASER BASED WHITE LIGHT SYSTEM CONFIGURED FOR COMMUNICATION
A communication module includes a laser driving unit (LDU) and one or more multifunction illumination units. The one or more multifunction illumination units are be coupled to the LDU with an electrical connection and configured to transmit both electrical power and data.
PROBABILISTICALLY SHAPED UNAMPLIFIED OPTICAL SIGNALING
An optical transmitter can generate probabilistically shaped quadrature amplitude modulation (PS-QAM) signaling for transmission over a fiber to a destination without optical amplification. The single fiber can transmit the PS-QAM signaling using dense wavelength division multiplexing having a relatively large number of channels that are closely spaced. A coherent receiver can receive the PS-QAM signaling for decoding without implementing chromatic dispersion compensation.
Optical communication interface
Embodiments of the present disclosure include optical transmitters and transceivers with improved reliability. In some embodiments, the optical transmitters are used in network devices, such as in conjunction with a network switch. In one embodiment, lasers are operated at low power to improve reliability and power consumption. The output of the laser may be modulated by a non-direct modulator and received by integrated optical components, such as a modulator and/or multiplexer. The output of the optical components may be amplified by a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). Various advantageous configurations of lasers, optical components, and SOAs are disclosed. In some embodiments, SOAs are configured as part of a pluggable optical communication module, for example.

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR OPTICAL PULSE SEQUENCE GENERATION
A method of generating multiple channels of optical pulses comprises: providing a continuous wave optical input having an optical power; dividing the optical power of the optical input into equal consecutive slices in the time domain; and allocating the consecutive slices sequentially to two or more optical outputs such that each output forms a channel of optical pulses of equal pulse repetition rate shifted in time relative to the or each other channel.
