Multi-channel electro-optic receiver with polarization diversity and timing-skew management
An electro-optic receiver includes a polarization splitter and rotator (PSR) that directs incoming light having a first polarization through a first end of an optical waveguide, and that rotates incoming light from a second polarization to the first polarization to create polarization-rotated light that is directed to a second end of the optical waveguide. The incoming light of the first polarization and the polarization-rotated light travel through the optical waveguide in opposite directions. A plurality of ring resonators is optically coupled the optical waveguide. Each ring resonator is configured to operate at a respective resonant wavelength, such that the incoming light of the first polarization having the respective resonant wavelength optically couples into said ring resonator in a first propagation direction, and such that the polarization-rotated light having the respective resonant wavelength optically couples into said ring resonator in a second propagation direction opposite the first propagation direction.

Provided is a coherent detection implementing apparatus, system and method. The apparatus includes: a first transceiver unit, configured to send an optical signal in a first direction to a second device, wherein the optical signal in the first direction includes a direct current optical signal with a first wavelength and a modulated optical signal with a second wavelength; and configured to receive an optical signal in a second direction from the second device; and a first coherent receiver, connected with the first transceiver unit, and configured to take a part of the direct current optical signal with the first wavelength in the optical signal in the first direction as a Local Oscillator (LO) light for coherent reception, perform coherent frequency mixing between the LO light and the optical signal in the second direction, and demodulate the optical signal in the second direction.

For example, 1D or 2D formatted signals that travel through fiber optic media may be recovered by separating the light into X- and Y-polarization components, rotating one polarization component (e.g., Y-component) into the polarization space of the other component (e.g., Y-component into the X-polarization space), delaying the rotated component enough to avoid destructive interference and combining the delayed component with the undelayed component to form a folded optical signal, which may then be processed as a X-polarized signal.

In a coherent optical receiver device, the dynamic range considerably decreases in the case of selectively receiving the optical multiplexed signals by means of the wavelength of the local oscillator light, therefore, a coherent optical receiver device according to an exemplary aspect of the invention includes a coherent optical receiver receiving optical multiplexed signals in a lump in which signal light is multiplexed; a variable optical attenuator; a local oscillator connected to the coherent optical receiver; and a first controller controlling the variable optical attenuator by means of a first control signal based on an output signal of the coherent optical receiver; wherein the coherent optical receiver includes a 90-degree hybrid circuit, a photoelectric converter, and an impedance conversion amplifier, and selectively detects the signal light interfering with local oscillation light output by the local oscillator out of the optical multiplexed signals; and the variable optical attenuator is disposed in the optical path of the optical multiplexed signals in a stage preceding the photoelectric converter, inputs the optical multiplexed signals, and outputs them to the coherent optical receiver controlling the intensity of the optical multiplexed signals based on the first control signal.

A radio communication system for duplex communication comprising an optical carrier generator for generating optical carrier signals, a local oscillator (LO) for generating an electrical signal in a radio communication band, an information signal source, electro-optic modulators driven directly at an input electrical port by said information signal and said LO signal to modulate a portion of said optical carrier signal to form a modulated portion being an optical band information signal for transmission over an optical link; and a photodetector remote from said electro-optic modulators for receiving said transmitted optical band information signal from said optical link, and directly generating an electrical signal that is up-converted for radio transmission, or down-converted to a baseband frequency.

The PSR rotates a portion of the incoming light having a second polarization to the first polarization to provide polarization-rotated light. The PSR directs the polarization-rotated light through a second OW. Each of the first and second OW's has a respective combiner section. The first and second OW combiner sections extend parallel to each other and have opposite light propagation directions. A plurality of ring resonators is disposed between the combiner sections of the first and second OW's and within an evanescent optically coupling distance of both the first and second OW's. Each of ring resonators operates at a respective resonant wavelength to optically couple light from the combiner section of the first OW into the combiner section of the second OW.

A method for encoding in a receiver using a polarizing characteristic in a visible light communication system based on a gold nanoparticle, which is performed by a computer device, includes splitting a receive signal into left circular polarization light and right circular polarization light by allowing the receive signal to pass through a linear polarizer and estimating a phase retardation difference, and detecting a transmit symbol by estimating the phase retardation difference.

A system comprises a transmitter that generates a combined signal including a first group of optical signals and a second group of optical signals, the first group of optical signals comprising M+X number of optical signals in a first polarization mode, the second group of optical signals comprising N number of optical signals in a second polarization mode, wherein the number of N and M optical signals comprise payload signals, where the X number of optical signals comprises at least one first pilot signal. The system may further include a receiver comprising a polarization recovery device that receives the combined signal and that recovers, from the combined signal, the first group of optical signals with the first polarization mode and the second group optical signals with the second polarization mode based on feedback indicative of at least one signal characteristic of the at least one first pilot signal.

A coherent optical receiving apparatus including a polarization optical splitter, a polarization controller, an optical hybrid unit, and a combiner. The polarization optical splitter receives signal light and local oscillator light in any polarization mode, decomposes the signal light into a plurality of beams of sub signal light, and decomposes the local oscillator light into a plurality of beams of sub local oscillator light. The optical hybrid unit obtains a plurality of beams of hybrid light by performing optical hybridization on the sub signal and sub local oscillator lights, the combiner performs conversion on the plurality of beams of hybrid light to obtain and output coherent electrical signals, and the polarization controller controls polarization of the local oscillator light.
