An auto-rotation module having a single-layer neural network on a user device can convert a document image to a monochrome image having black and white pixels and segment the monochrome image into bounding boxes, each bounding box defining a connected segment of black pixels in the monochrome image. The auto-rotation module can determine textual snippets from the bounding boxes and prepare them into input images for the single-layer neural network. The single-layer neural network is trained to process each input image, recognize a correct orientation, and output a set of results for each input image. Each result indicates a probability associated with a particular orientation. The auto-rotation module can examine the results, determine what degree of rotation is needed to achieve a correct orientation of the document image, and automatically rotate the document image by the degree of rotation needed to achieve the correct orientation of the document image.

A controller of an image reading device performs search for an edge candidate position inward from an edge portion in a main scanning direction of analysis image data in an extraction process of extracting a document region from read image data. When the retrieved edge candidate position corresponds to a dirt position, the search is continued whereas when the retrieved edge candidate position does not correspond to the dirt position, the document region is extracted from the read image data at the retrieved edge candidate position.

The second skew angle corresponds to reverse of the first skew angle. The circuitry further performs the skew correction on the image of the other surface based on the second skew angle, and outputs at least one of the image of the one surface subjected to the skew correction and the image of the other surface subjected to the skew correction.

Based on a number of the feature points extracted from the reference image the alignment is performed using positions of the feature points or using positions of sheet vertices each indicating a corner of the sheet.

The method includes capturing an image, dynamically comparing a previously captured image with a preview image on a display of a capture device until a predetermined overlap threshold is satisfied, generating a user interface to provide feedback on the display of the capture device to guide a movement of the capture device, and capturing the preview image with enough overlap with the previously captured image with little to no tilt for creating a linear panorama.
