In an aspect, a direct-current plasma torch apparatus is provided. The plasma torch apparatus includes first and second electrodes and an insulating body, where the electrodes are electrically connected to an external power source to generate an arc discharge between the first and second electrodes. The plasma torch apparatus can be configured as a modular torch apparatus for simple removal and replacement of elements of the plasma torch apparatus. The plasma torch apparatus can also be configured as a cooled plasma torch apparatus to prolong the working life of elements of the plasma torch apparatus.

An electrode for a consumable cartridge of a plasma arc torch is provided. The electrode comprises a substantially hollow body defining a proximal end, a distal end and a longitudinal axis extending therebetween. The electrode also includes a plurality of flanges, including a proximal flange and a distal flange, disposed circumferentially about an external surface of the hollow body and extending radially outward. Each flange defines one or more holes configured to conduct a gas flow therethrough along the external surface of the hollow body. The one or more holes on the proximal flange define a first combined cross-sectional flow area that is different from a second combined cross-sectional flow area defined by the one or more holes on the distal flange.

The invention relates to a method for conducting gas in a gas-cooled plasma torch wherein the plasma torch has a plasma torch body which holds an electrode with an open end and a closed end. A cavity extends from the open end in the direction of the closed end, and which, with a spacing in an axial direction, holds a nozzle by means of a nozzle holder. The nozzle has a central opening with an upstream inlet end, into which the electrode projects, and with an outlet end with a nozzle bore and is surrounded by a nozzle cap and/or a nozzle protection cap. The plasma torch body has an opening for a gas feeder, which opening is fluidically connected to a cooling tube which projects into the open end of the electrode.

In a wall of the gas-conducting unit body, there are situated at least one opening, which is inclined by an angle δ in a range of ± 15° with respect to the longitudinal axis L1, and at least one second opening, which is inclined radially with respect to the longitudinal axis L1 or which, in a radial plane, is inclined at an angle γ in the range of ± 30°from the radial to the longitudinal axis L1.

The invention features an inner cap for a liquid-cooled plasma arc torch. The inner cap includes a body having a longitudinal axis, a first end, and a second end. The first end includes an annular portion disposed proximate a torch tip. A liquid passage is formed within the body, is shaped to convey a liquid therethrough, and has a first set of ports formed in the annular portion. A gas passage is formed within the body, is shaped to convey a gas therethrough, and includes a second set of ports formed in the annular portion. The annular portion is configured such that subsets of ports in the first set of ports direct the liquid in a radial direction with respect to the longitudinal axis and alternate, in a rotational direction about the longitudinal axis, with subsets of ports in the second set of ports.

A plasma arc torch is provided for use in a plasma cutting system. The plasma arc torch includes a torch body for conducting electrical current. The torch body includes a torch tip configured to pass the electrical current to at least one consumable component connected to the tip. The plasma arc torch also includes at least one antenna positioned relative to the torch tip. The antenna is used to wirelessly detect the presence of the at least one consumable component. The plasma arc torch further includes a detection circuit configured to permit passing of the electrical current from the torch tip to the at least one consumable component based on at least the wireless detection.
