ELECTRODE-SUPPORTING ASSEMBLY FOR CONTACT-START PLASMA ARC TORCH
An electrode-supporting assembly for a contact-start plasma arc torch has an insulator that partially houses an electrode, and employs a spring-loaded plunger to bias the electrode to a forward position. The spring is engaged between the plunger and a contact element attached to the insulator, and may conduct electrical current to the electrode. The plunger, spring, and contact element are retained in the insulator when the torch is opened to replace the electrode, which is a consumable part. The electrode and the plunger have axially-engagable mating surfaces to assure good thermal and electrical conductivity therebetween. Conductivity can be further enhanced by forming the plunger of silver or a silver-bearing alloy. In some embodiments, a passage through the insulator is partitioned into forward and rear chambers, with the plunger, spring, and contact element trapped in the rear chamber.
SYSTEMS, METHODS, AND DEVICES FOR GENERATING PREDOMINANTLY RADIALLY EXPANDED PLASMA FLOW
Systems, devices, and methods generating a plasma flow are disclosed. A method may include applying energy that alternates between being at a base level for a first duration and at a pulse level for a second duration according to a controlled pattern, generating a plasma flow having a directional axis, and discharging the plasma flow alternating between a base configuration and a pulse configuration according to the controlled pattern. The plasma flow in the base configuration may have (1) a first temperature at the outlet and (2) a first flow front that advances along the directional axis. The plasma flow in the pulse configuration may have (1) a second temperature at the outlet that is greater than the first temperature and (2) a second flow front that advances along the directional axis at a speed greater than the first flow front.

An electrode has a silver tip portion which is brazed to a copper body portion where the silver portion and joint have a particular structural relationship.
CUTTING OR WELDING TORCH COMPONENT COMPRISING A BUTTRESS THREAD
Cutting or welding torch component comprising a ridge (8) forming a thread for connecting the component to other parts of the cutting or welding torch, the thread having a pressure flank (81, 91), a clearance flank (82, 92), a root flat (84, 94) and a crest flat (83, 93), wherein—the angle included by the pressure flank (81, 91) and clearance flank (82, 92) is 60° or less, —the angle α included by the pressure flank (81, 91) and a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis (10, 20, 30) of the thread is 40° to 50°, —the angle β included by the clearance flank (82, 92) and a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis (10, 20, 30) of the thread is 0° to 20°, and—the height (VZ) of the ridge (8) is 0.4 times the pitch of the thread or less.
CONVERGENT CONSUMABLE FOR FOCUSING PLASMA ARC
A consumable for a torch head is disclosed. The consumable for a torch head includes a frustoconical operative end, and a concave outer surface formed on the frustoconical operative end. The concave outer surface is configured to guide a flow of gas to a focal point downstream of the frustoconical operative end.
Adjustable length consumables for a liquid-cooled plasma arc torch
A torch tip is provided for a liquid-cooled plasma arc cutting torch. The torch tip includes an electrode with an elongated electrode body having a distal end and a proximal end extending along a longitudinal axis. The electrode body includes at least one interior threaded connection at the proximal end for engaging a liquid-cooled electrode holder. The electrode holder comprises a liquid coolant channel that does not extend into the electrode body. The electrode body has (i) a length extending along the longitudinal axis and (ii) a diameter associated with a widest portion of the electrode body along the longitudinal axis between the proximal and distal ends, where a ratio of the length to the diameter of the electrode body is greater than about 5.
Methods of making and assembling together components of plasma torch electrode
A method of making and assembling together components of a plasma torch electrode inside an oxygen-free environment. According to one implementation the method includes machining an outer surface of an emitter to produce an oxide free outer surface and machining an opening in a distal end of a main body of the electrode, the opening being bound by an oxide-free inner surface of the main body after the machining. In the oxygen-free environment, the emitter is then secured inside the opening of the main body such that the oxide-free outer surface of the emitter is secured to the oxide-free inner surface of the main body.
