The microprocessor is configured to a) at pre-ignition, power the AC power source at an operational frequency f.sub.op higher than the resonant frequency f.sub.r, b) decrease the operational frequency f.sub.op of the AC power source until there is plasma ignition, and c) after the plasma ignition, further decrease the operational frequency f.sub.op of the AC power source to a frequency lower than the resonant frequency f.sub.r.

The operational state is one of: a no plasma state, a plasma origination state indicative of an ignited arc expanding into a plasma by gas flow thereinto, and a plasma maintenance state indicative of the plasma being expanded.

This is a pluggable plasma discharge tube device having a replaceable discharge tube and a hand-held shell into which the replaceable discharge tube is plugged. There is a single electrode inside of the tube and no other electrodes outside. This electrode is connected to an output of a power supply and another output of the power supply is connected to a ground wire of its circuit. The input of the power supply is a 12V or lower, DC (direct current) source, or a battery. The plasma is generated via a contact-tube outside discharge, or a plasma jet from the tube, that uses working inert gas. The plasma discharge tube will produce atmospheric pressure, cold quasi-glow plasma, which can be used for sensitive surface disinfection, sterilization, as well as facial skin rejuvenation, treatment of skin tissue infections and destruction of cancer cells.

An electron-beam induced plasma is utilized to establish a non-mechanical, electrical contact to a device of interest. This plasma source may be referred to as atmospheric plasma source and may be configured to provide a plasma column of very fine diameter and controllable characteristics. The plasma column traverses the atmospheric space between the plasma source into the atmosphere and the device of interest and acts as an electrical path to the device of interest in such a way that a characteristic electrical signal can be collected from the device. Additionally, by controlling the gases flowing into the plasma column the probe may be used for surface modification, etching and deposition.
