A piston for an internal combustion engine, configured as a gallery-cooled piston of two-piece construction includes a main body and a ring element. The ring element which has a ring zone and a fire land encloses a cooling gallery on the outside, which cooling gallery is delimited on the inside by an intermediate wall which separates the cooling gallery from a combustion chamber recess which is made in a piston head of the main body. The main body and the ring element together form two circumferential dividing planes which are offset with respect to one another, to which end in each case two interacting joining webs of the ring element and of the main body are connected with a material-to-material bond.

A method is used to produce a piston pump having a housing and a piston subassembly. The piston subassembly is displaceably guided in the housing and has a first, rod-like piston element and a second, sleeve-like piston element. The second piston element is connected to the first piston element via a press fit. At least one transverse bore and a longitudinal bore are arranged in the second piston element. A stop edge for the housing is arranged on the second piston element. The piston subassembly also has an inlet valve, which includes a receiving element, in which an inlet valve spring and an inlet valve sealing element are arranged. The piston subassembly also has a corresponding inlet valve seat, which is arranged on the second piston element. While the second piston element is being machined, the press fit and the longitudinal bore are produced and/or finished in one step.

To simplify the production method and make it cheaper, the upper piston part is forged using the method of hot forming and of cold calibration, to finish it to such an extent that further processing of the combustion bowl and of the upper cooling channel regions can be eliminated.

The piston body includes a first piece which includes a pair of skirt portions and a pair of pin bosses and a second piece which includes a crown portion with an upper combustion surface and an at least partially enclosed oil gallery. The first and second pieces are joined together at a joint that is located on a side of the oil gallery opposite of the upper combustion surface. The first piece is made through casting or forging, and the second piece is made through an additive manufacturing process, such as direct metal laser sintering.

Then, moving the upper crown portion and the lower crown portion toward one another and initiating contact between the upper crown portion and the lower crown portion at their respective tapered peaks. Then, continuing moving the upper crown and the lower crown further toward one another after making initial contact at their respective tapered peaks and forming a friction weld joint between the free ends of the at least one upper rib and the at least one lower rib free end.
