To obtain a magnetic core having an improved withstand voltage property while maintaining a high relative magnetic permeability, and the like. The magnetic core contains large particles observed as soft magnetic particles having a Heywood diameter of 5 μm or more and 25 μm or less and small particles observed as soft magnetic particles having a Heywood diameter of 0.5 μm or more and less than 5 μm in a cross section. C1<C2 is satisfied in which an average circularity of the small particles close to the large particles is C1 and an average circularity of all small particles observed in the cross section including small particles not close to the large particles is C2. The small particles close to the large particles are defined as small particles whose distance from centroids of the small particles to a surface of the large particles is 3 μm or less.
Composite wear pad and methods of making the same
A composite wear pad includes a substrate that is selected from the group of iron based alloys, steel, nickel based alloys, and cobalt based alloys. A hard particle-matrix alloy layer is bonded at a surface to the substrate. The hard particle-matrix alloy layer has a plurality of hard particles dispersed in a matrix alloy. The hard particle-matrix alloy layer has a thickness ranging between greater than about 13 millimeters and about 20 millimeters.

Gamma radiation stand-off detection, tamper detection, and authentication via resonant meta-material structures
Resonant meta-material structures are defined by metallic, dielectric or other materials that form nanoshells or nanomeshes that can be situated proximate to ionizing-radiation-sensitive layers so as to provide ionizing-radiation-dose-dependent optical properties. Such meta-material structures can also define aligned or periodic, semi-random, or other arrangements of nanostructures that are coupled to or include stressed layers. Detection of optical radiation from such structures is used to determine gamma radiation dose or to detect a disturbance of the nanostructure indicating tampering.
SERS SYSTEM EMPLOYING NANOPARTICLE CLUSTER ARRAYS WITH MULTISCALE SIGNAL ENHANCEMENT
Defined nanoparticle cluster arrays (NCAs) with dimensions up to 25.4 m square are fabricated on a 10 nm gold film using template guided self-assembly. Structural parameters are precisely controlled, allowing systematic variation of the number of nanoparticles in the clusters (n) and edge to edge separation () between 1<n<20 and 50 nm1000 nm, respectively. Rayleigh scattering spectra and surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) signal intensities as functions of n and reveal direct near-field coupling between the particles within individual clusters, whose strength increases with cluster size (n) until it saturates at around n=4. Strong near-field interactions between clusters significantly affects the SERS signal enhancement for edge-to-edge separations <200 nm. The NCAs support multiscale signal enhancement from simultaneous inter- and intra-cluster coupling and |E|-field enhancement. Applications include SERS-based spectral identification of bacteria.
Subwavelength coatings and methods for making and using same
Methods are disclosed for forming subwavelength coatings for use in the UV, visible, or infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum. A first material and a second material are deposited onto a substrate. The first material may include dielectric spheres of subwavelength size that self-assemble on the substrate to form a template or scaffold with subwavelength size voids between the spheres into which the second material is deposited or filled. First and second materials are heated on the substrate at a preselected temperature to form the subwavelength coating.
