Void-based metamaterials
11506470 · 2022-11-22 · ·

A porous metamaterial is disclosed, comprising a matrix (101) having a plurality of voids (103) therein, wherein a content of interest (104) is trapped within each of at least part of the voids (103), detached from the matrix (101), thereby providing a respective unit-cell (100) of the metamaterial, with an intended predetermined property associated with the presence of the content of interest (104) within the at least one void (103). A variety of applications of the disclosed metamaterials are presented, including armors having either non-Newtonian fluids or magnetic particles confined within the voids as a content of interest. Upon subjecting the magnetic particles to a rotating magnetic field, the magnetic particles spin within the voids and gain angular momentum, thereby improving the resistance of the armor against penetration. Systems and methods for manufacturing porous metamaterial units having contents of interest confined within voids therein, are also disclosed.

According to some aspects, a fire protection thermal insulation system is provided, comprising a first insulation layer having a cellular structure, wherein cells of the cellular structure comprise an inorganic insulator in a powder form, the first insulation layer on a fire facing side of the thermal insulation system, and a second insulation layer comprising inorganic fibers, the second insulation layer on a non-fire facing side of the thermal insulation system.

Targeted delivery of concrete admixture

A sheet 100 of water-soluble material such as polyvinyl alcohol comprises a plurality of individual, sealed pockets 110, each containing concrete admixture. The sheet is cut to size and attached to the interior of a formwork structure 200 with, for example, PVA glue. After concrete is poured into the formwork, covering the sheet 100, the sheet dissolves, releasing the admixture onto the surface of the concrete as it sets. In another arrangement, a sealed container 300 formed from a water-soluble material contains concrete admixture. The external wall of the container has a plurality of regions 320 where a thickness of the wall is reduced. The container is attached to interior walls of a formwork structure 200 or to reinforcing bars inside a formwork structure. After concrete is poured into the formwork, submerging the container, the container dissolves, with the thinner regions dissolving sooner, releasing the admixture into the concrete.
