Abstract
A cryogenic carbon capture system includes a flue gas cooling device in fluid communication with a heat engine. The flue gas cooling device receives a fluid stream that is downstream from the heat engine and a cooled liquid coolant stream so that the fluid stream is cooled by the cooled liquid coolant stream and a cooled flue gas stream is formed. A cryogenic carbon capture unit receives at least a portion of the cooled flue gas stream and separates carbon dioxide from the first portion of the cooled flue gas stream so that a clean flue gas stream and a carbon dioxide stream are formed. A liquid coolant cooling device receives the clean flue gas stream and a liquid coolant stream and cools the liquid coolant stream using the clean flue gas stream so that the cooled liquid coolant stream is formed and provided to the flue gas cooling device. The heat engine is in fluid communication with the cryogenic carbon capture system and receives a portion of a split stream that is downstream from the flue gas cooling device as an exhaust gas recirculation stream and an air stream.
Claims
1. A system for separating carbon dioxide from an exhaust gas of a heat engine comprising: a. a heat engine configured to receive and consume a fuel stream so that a heat engine exhaust stream is produced; b. a cryogenic carbon capture system including: i) a flue gas cooling device in fluid communication with the heat engine and having a flue gas cooling device outlet, said flue gas cooling device configured to receive a fluid stream that is downstream from the heat engine and a cooled liquid coolant stream so that the fluid stream is cooled by the cooled liquid coolant stream and a cooled flue gas stream is formed, said cooled flue gas stream exiting the flue gas cooling device through the flue gas cooling device outlet; ii) a cryogenic carbon capture unit in fluid communication with the flue gas cooling device outlet and configured to receive at least a portion of the cooled flue gas stream and to separate carbon dioxide from the first portion of the cooled flue gas stream so that a clean flue gas stream and a carbon dioxide stream are formed; iii) a liquid coolant cooling device configured to receive the clean flue gas stream from the cryogenic carbon capture unit and a liquid coolant stream and to cool the liquid coolant stream using the clean flue gas stream so that the cooled liquid coolant stream is formed and provided to the flue gas cooling device; c. said heat engine in fluid communication with the cryogenic carbon capture system and configured to receive: i) a portion of a split stream that is downstream from the flue gas cooling device as an exhaust gas recirculation stream; and ii) an air stream.
2. The system of claim 1 wherein the clean flue gas stream has a temperature at or below an ambient temperature.
3. The system of claim 1 wherein the fluid stream received by the flue gas cooling device is the heat engine exhaust gas stream.
4. The system of claim 1 further comprising a heat recovery heat exchanger configured to receive the heat engine exhaust stream and a liquid stream and to cool the turbine exhaust stream using the liquid stream so that the liquid stream is heated and a flue gas stream is formed as the fluid stream is received by the flue gas cooling device.
5. The system of claim 4 wherein the liquid stream received by the heat recovery heat exchanger is at least partially vaporized to form a vaporized stream and further comprising a steam turbine that is driven by the vaporized stream.
6. The system of claim 1 wherein the cryogenic carbon capture unit includes the flue gas cooling device and the liquid coolant cooling device.
7. The system of claim 1 wherein the heat engine includes a combined-cycle turbine.
8. The system of claim 1 wherein the heat engine includes a simple-cycle turbine.
9. The system of claim 1 wherein the heat engine includes an internal combustion engine.
10. The system of claim 1 wherein the split stream is the cooled flue gas stream.
11. The system of claim 1 wherein the split stream is the clean flue gas stream.
12. The system of claim 1 wherein the heat engine receives the exhaust gas recirculation stream from the cryogenic carbon capture unit.
13. The system of claim 1 further comprising a dryer positioned between the flue gas cooling device and the cryogenic carbon capture unit, said dryer configured to receive the cooled flue gas stream from the flue gas cooling device outlet and to remove water from the cooled flue gas stream so that at least a partially dried flue gas stream is formed, said dryer having an outlet in fluid communication with the cryogenic carbon capture unit and the heat engine.
14. The system of claim 13 wherein the dryer uses a desiccant or a fluid.
15. The system of claim 13 further comprising a flow boosting device configured to receive the cooled flue gas stream from the flue gas cooling device outlet and to direct (i) the cooled flue gas stream to an inlet of the dryer or (ii) the exhaust gas recirculation stream to the heat engine.

The system of claim 1 further comprising: d. a first dryer having an outlet in fluid communication with the heat engine; e. a second dryer having an inlet in fluid communication with the outlet of the first dryer and an outlet in fluid communication with the cryogenic carbon capture unit; f. said first dryer configured to receive the cooled flue gas stream from the flue gas cooling device outlet, remove water from the cooled flue gas stream so that a partially dried flue gas stream is formed and direct the partially dried flue gas stream out of the first drying device outlet so that a first portion of the partially dried flue gas stream is directed to the inlet of the second drying device and a second portion of the partially dried flue gas stream is directed to the heat engine as the exhaust gas recirculation stream; g. said second dryer configured to remove water from the first portion of the of the partially dried flue gas stream so that a further dried flue gas stream is formed and directed to the cryogenic carbon capture unit.
17. The system of claim 16 further comprising a waste heat recovery heat exchanger configured to cool the fluid stream that is downstream from the heat engine prior to the flue gas cooling device.

The system of claim 17 wherein the waste heat recovery heat exchanger is configured to receive a heat recovery stream from the cryogenic carbon capture unit, warm the heat recovery stream so that the fluid stream that is downstream from the heat engine is cooled and a return stream is formed, and direct the return stream to the cryogenic carbon capture unit.
19. The system of claim 1 further comprising a supplemental heat exchanger configured to cool the cooled flue gas stream prior to receipt by the cryogenic carbon capture unit and to warm the clean flue gas stream prior to receipt by the liquid coolant cooling device.

The system of claim 1 wherein the cryogenic carbon capture unit includes a cryogenic capture unit dryer configured to receive the cooled flue gas stream and a cryogenic capture unit heat exchanger configured to receive and cool a dried flue gas stream from the cryogenic capture unit dryer and wherein the split stream is downstream from the cryogenic capture unit heat exchanger.
21. The system of claim 1 wherein the fluid stream that is downstream from the heat engine includes a portion of the heat engine exhaust stream.
22. The system of claim 1 wherein the fluid stream that is downstream from the heat engine includes the entire heat engine exhaust stream.
23. A method for separating carbon dioxide from an exhaust gas of a heat engine comprising the steps of: a. cooling a fluid stream downstream from the heat engine using a cooled liquid coolant stream so that a cooled flue gas stream is formed; b. separating carbon dioxide from the cooled flue gas stream in a cryogenic carbon capture process so that a clean flue gas stream and a carbon dioxide stream are formed; c. cooling a liquid coolant stream using the clean flue gas stream so that the cooled liquid coolant stream is formed; d. directing a portion of a split stream that is downstream from the cooling of step a. to the heat engine.
24. The method of claim 23 wherein the clean flue gas stream has a temperature at or below an ambient temperature.
25. The method of claim 23 wherein the fluid stream that is cooled in step a. is the heat engine exhaust gas stream.
26. The method of claim 23 further comprising the step of cooling the heat engine exhaust stream using a liquid stream so that the liquid stream is heated and a flue gas stream is formed as the fluid stream that is cooled in step a.
27. The method of claim 26 wherein the liquid stream is at least partially vaporized while cooling the heat engine exhaust stream to form a vapor stream and further comprising the step of directing the vapor stream to a steam turbine.
28. The method of claim 23 further comprising the step of drying the cooled flue gas stream of step a. to form a dried flue gas stream and wherein step b. includes separating carbon dioxide from a first portion of the dried flue gas stream.
29. The method of claim 28 wherein the step of drying the cooled flue gas stream includes use of a desiccant or a fluid.
30. The method of claim 23 further comprising the steps of cooling the cooled flue gas stream and the clean flue gas stream.

[0024] An exhaust gas stream 18 exits the heat engine 8 (which in the illustrated embodiment is turbine 12) and is directed in part or in total to an optional heat recovery heat exchanger that, in the illustrated embodiments, is integrated into a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) 22. As is known in the art, the HRSG includes one or more heat exchangers that receive the flue gas stream 18 and a liquid stream 24 (typically water). The liquid stream is warmed by the exhaust gas stream in the HRSG 22 so that a stream of steam 26 is produced. The steam turbine exhaust stream 34 exits the steam turbine while a cooled turbine exhaust stream exits the HRSG as flue gas stream 36. The flue gas stream 36 is directed in part or in total to a flue gas cooling device, such as cooling tower 38 of a cryogenic carbon capture system 40. Alternative cooling devices known in the art may be used in place of cooling tower 38, including, but not limited, to a horizontal duct with a liquid spray.
[0025] A liquid coolant cooling device, such as cooling tower 42 of cryogenic carbon capture system 40, receives a liquid coolant feed stream 44 and, as explained below, is cooled. Alternative cooling devices known in the art may be used in place of cooling tower 42, including, but not limited, to a horizontal duct with a liquid spray. As an example only, the liquid coolant may be water. The cooled liquid coolant stream 46 flows to the flue gas cooling tower 38. Due to passage of the flue gas stream 36 through the flue gas cooling tower 38, and contact with the liquid coolant stream 46 within the flue gas cooling tower 38, a cooled flue gas stream 48 exits the flue gas cooling tower 52. A warmed liquid coolant stream 54 exits the bottom of the flue gas cooling tower 12.

This stream is directed back to the heat engine 8, which in the illustrated embodiment includes a compressor 14, which also receives cooling air stream 58. Steams 56 and 58 are combined and compressed in compressor 14 of the heat engine so that a compressed mixed stream 62 is formed. This stream is directed to the turbine 12 to aid in cooling and combustion within the heat engine 8.

Due to the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) as described above, the carbon capture feed stream 66 has a higher carbon dioxide concentration and a lower mass flow rate (when compared to a system without EGR). As an example only, embodiments of the system of the disclosure may increase the carbon dioxide concentration of the carbon capture feed stream 66 from a level of 4% concentration to 10% concentration. A higher portion of the cooled flue gas stream 48, or other streams referenced above, may be diverted to stream 56 to further increase the carbon dioxide concentration of the carbon capture feed stream 66.
[0030] The carbon capture feed stream 66 entering the cryogenic carbon capture unit 64 is processed so that carbon dioxide is separated and directed out of the cryogenic carbon capture unit 64 as stream 68.
