Optical assembly

A device can include a display that includes a display area; and an optical assembly that includes an optical element that defines an origin of a view of a camera, where the optical element is positionable directly in front of the display area of the display.

Light source unit, illumination device, processing equipment, and deflection element

A light source unit includes: a first light emission point from which a first beam is emitted; a second light emission point from which a second beam is emitted and which is disposed apart from the first light emission point in a second direction perpendicular to a first direction; a deflection element that deflects the first and/or second beam; and a first condensing optical element that focuses, on a light collection surface, the first and second beams. The first beam at the first light emission point overlaps the second beam at the second light emission point in a third direction, and on the light collection surface, the first and second beams overlap each other in the second direction and are separate from each other in the third direction.

Systems and methods for mixed reality

A virtual image generation system comprises a planar optical waveguide having opposing first and second faces, an in-coupling (IC) element configured for optically coupling a collimated light beam from an image projection assembly into the planar optical waveguide as an in-coupled light beam, a first orthogonal pupil expansion (OPE) element associated with the first face of the planar optical waveguide for splitting the in-coupled light beam into a first set of orthogonal light beamlets, a second orthogonal pupil expansion (OPE) element associated with the second face of the planar optical waveguide for splitting the in-coupled light beam into a second set of orthogonal light beamlets, and an exit pupil expansion (EPE) element associated with the planar optical waveguide for splitting the first and second sets of orthogonal light beamlets into an array of out-coupled light beamlets that exit the planar optical waveguide.

Variable pixel density display system with mechanically-actuated image projector

Head-mounted virtual and augmented reality display systems include a light projector with one or more emissive micro-displays having a first resolution and a pixel pitch. The projector outputs light forming frames of virtual content having at least a portion associated with a second resolution greater than the first resolution. The projector outputs light forming a first subframe of the rendered frame at the first resolution, and parts of the projector are shifted using actuators, such that physical positions of light output for individual pixels occupy gaps between the old locations of light output for individual pixels. The projector then outputs light forming a second subframe of the rendered frame. The first and second subframes are outputted within the flicker fusion threshold. Advantageously, an emissive micro-display (e.g., micro-LED display) having a low resolution can form a frame having a higher resolution by using the same light emitters to function as multiple pixels of that frame.

Semiconductor laser shaping device

A semiconductor laser shaping device includes, along the light path of a semiconductor laser, a fast axis collimating lens, slow axis collimating lens, the half wave plate, a polarization beam combining prism, and a crawling prism group. The laser emitted by the semiconductor laser is collimated by a fast-axis collimating lens and then by a slow-axis collimating lens, and subsequently injected into a half wave plate and polarization beam combining prism, which compresses its spot size along the slow axis while keeping the spot size unchanged along the fast axis. The laser beam then passes through the crawling prism group, which shifts a portion of the light in the slow-axis direction to the fast-axis direction, which again compresses the light beam in the slow-axis direction. The device can reduce the beam size of a semiconductor laser in the slow-axis direction, reducing its beam parameter product and improving beam quality.

BEAMFORMING VACUUM CELL

Beamformers are formed (e.g., carved) from a stack of transparent sheets. A rear face of each sheet has a reflective coating. The reflectivities of the coatings vary monotonically with sheet position within the stack. The sheets are tilted relative to the intended direction of an input beam and then bonded to form the stack. The carving can include dicing the stack to yield stacklets, and polishing the stacklets to form beamformers. Each beamformer is thus a stack of beamsplitters, including a front beamsplitter in the form of a triangular or trapezoidal prism, and one or more beamsplitters in the form of rhomboid prisms. In use, a beamformer forms an output beam from an input beam. More specifically, the beamformer splits an input beam into plural output beam components that collectively constitute an output beam that differs in cross section from the input beam.
