A tethered item is associated with an identifier that uniquely identifies the item, and one or more content processing devices execute obtaining an identifier of the item, and correlating the obtained item identifier with information related to the tethered item.

A point-of-sale terminal includes a touch panel screen displaying first selectable objects and a second selectable object associated with one of the first selectable objects, first and second memory regions, and a processor. The first memory region stores for each of first selectable objects, display location and size, attributes of an image, and an operation command to be issued upon selection of the first selectable object. The second memory region stores data of the second selectable object. A method and system for conducting an online payment transaction through a point of sale device. The method includes receiving input from a user selecting an item for purchase through the point of sale device; calculating a total purchase amount for the item in response to a request from the user to purchase the item; and sending payment authorization for the total purchase amount from the point of sale device to a payment entity, in which the payment authorization is sent to the payment entity via a mobile communication device of the user. The method further includes receiving a result of the payment authorization from the payment entity through the mobile communication device; and completing the payment transaction based on the result of the payment authorization.

The invention describes how a consumer can hold their NFC enabled device in proximity to an NFC enabled point-of-sale terminal and with a single wave or tap to automatically redeem coupons, pay for a purchase using a default payment card or a selected card, view receipts view reward point balances, and receive relevant coupons and other digital artifacts both before and after the purchase. The NFC enabled device includes a secure element with a payment application, payment credentials, and other digital artifacts such as coupons. The secure element can be internal to the mobile device, externally affixed to the mobile device, or inserted into a slot within the body of the mobile device.

A kiosk gift card system and method for purchasing and redeeming gift cards is disclosed. The system/method includes a gift card distribution kiosk that provides a user with access to a multitude of different forms of gift cards that may be purchased and printed onto customizable gift card stock. The kiosk includes a kiosk processor interface, a gift card dispenser, a card reader, and gift card management server connected to a network. The gift card management server, through the kiosk processor interface, provides vendor options to users to select and pay via the card reader. The kiosk may be used to redeem unused user gift cards for a reduced value user selected gift card, reduced cash value, full value store card, rewards points, bank debit, and/or an electronic code (eCode) towards online user purchases.

A POS terminal includes a display device, a sensor, and a processor configured to determine an amount of merchandise based on a signal output from the sensor, determine a display pattern of a plurality of content images based on the determined amount of merchandise, and control the display device to display the content images according to the determined display pattern.

Techniques for using one point-of-sale (POS) device and application for the sale of two merchants' items are described. A first period of time of operation for the first merchant is received from the POS device via a first merchant account. A second period of time of operation for the second merchant is received via a second merchant account. A portion of the first period of time exclusive of the second period of time is determined. Access to the second merchant items via the first merchant account is provided, enabling the first merchant to offer the second merchant items for purchase during the portion of the first period of time. A request to authorize a purchase of an item from the first merchant that is one of the second merchant items is received during the portion of the first period of time. The transaction is facilitated.

In an embodiment, a point of sale (POS) device is provided. The POS device includes a memory and at least one processor. The processor is configured to perform an authorized set of functions established by an external management module. The authorized set of functions include purchase transaction processing of inventory identified as available to the POS device by the external management module.

As part of an online shopping process, a user's selection of offers, services, etc. is facilitated. A merchant's e-commerce server may form a composite display page that includes a display page section transmitted to the e-commerce server from a payment gateway in connection with an online purchase transaction. The display page section may include offer options selected or gathered by the payment gateway. The e-commerce server may serve the composite display page, including the offer options, to the customer in the online purchase transaction. The customer may easily select among the offer options, and may effect sign-up therefor without entering personal information to implement the offer, because that information has already been collected or become available during a checkout phase of the online purchase transaction.
