The electrosurgical instrument comprises: an instrument shaft arranged to convey EM energy and an electrical signal for driving a magnetostrictive ultrasound transducer; a distal end assembly arranged at a distal end of the instrument shaft to receive the EM energy from the instrument shaft and deliver the EM energy from the distal end assembly for tissue treatment; and a magnetostrictive ultrasound transducer arranged to receive the electrical signal from the instrument shaft and generate ultrasonic vibrations around the distal end assembly for tissue treatment. Other embodiments provide an electrosurgical generator, and an electrosurgical apparatus comprising the instrument and generator.

Digital image analysis for robotic installation of surgical implants

Computer-implemented digital image analysis methods, apparatuses, and systems for robotic installation of surgical implants are disclosed. A disclosed apparatus plans a route within an anatomy of a patient from an incision site to a surgical implant site for robotic installation of a surgical implant. The apparatus uses digital imaging data to identify less-invasive installation paths and determine the dimensions of the surgical implant components being used. The apparatus segments the surgical implant into surgical implant subcomponents and modifies the surgical implant subcomponents, such that they can be inserted using the identified less-invasive installation paths.

Ultrasonic surgical instrument with integral shaft assembly torque wrench

A surgical instrument includes an end effector, a shaft assembly, and a torque wrench integrally connected with the shaft assembly. The shaft assembly has an acoustic waveguide extending therethrough and the end effector projects distally from the shaft assembly. The acoustic waveguide has a proximal end portion configured to rotatably couple with an ultrasonic transducer assembly. The torque wrench is configured to transmit torque applied to the acoustic waveguide up to a predetermined torque. A portion of the torque wrench is configured to deflect upon receipt of torque greater than the predetermined torque. Accordingly, the portion of the torque wrench slips relative to the acoustic waveguide for limiting coupling of the acoustic waveguide to the ultrasonic transducer assembly to the predetermined torque.

CATHETER WITH MICRO-PELTIER COOLING COMPONENTS

A catheter has a cooling distal section for freezing tissue to sub-zero temperatures with one or more miniature reverse thermoelectric or Peltier elements, also referred to herein as micro-Peltier cooling (MPC) units or electrodes. The MPC units may be on outer surface of an inflatable or balloon member or a tip electrode shell wall that has a fluid-containing interior cavity acting as a heat sink. Each MPC unit has a hot junction and a cold junction whose temperatures are regulated by the heat sink, and a voltage/current applied to the MPC units. A temperature differential of about 70 degrees Celsius may be achieved between the hot and cold junctions for extreme cooling, especially where the MPC units include semiconductor materials with high Peltier co-efficients. An outer coating of thermally-conductive but electrically-insulative material seals the MPC units to prevent unintended current paths through the MPC units.
