A system and method for locating magnetic material. In one embodiment the system includes a magnetic probe; a power module in electrical communication with the magnetic probe to supply current to the magnetic probe; a sense module in electrical communication with the magnetic probe to receive signals from the magnetic probe; and a computer in electrical communication with the power module and the sense module. The computer generates a waveform that controls the supply of current from the power module and receives a signal from the sense module that indicates the presence of magnetic material. The magnetic probe is constructed from a material having a coefficient of thermal expansion of substantially 10.sup.−6/° C. or less and a Young's modulus of substantially 50 GPa or greater. In one embodiment magnetic nanoparticles are injected into a breast and the lymph nodes collecting the particles are detected with the probe and deemed sentinel nodes.

Methods and apparatus for intraoperative assessment of parathyroid gland vascularity using laser speckle contrast imaging and applications of same

One aspect of the invention relates to a method for intraoperative assessment of parathyroid gland viability in a surgery. The method includes diffusing a beam of light onto a tissue surface of a parathyroid gland of a patient to illuminate the tissue surface; acquiring images of the illuminated tissue surface, where each of the acquired images includes a speckle pattern; and processing the acquired images to obtain speckle contrast images for the intraoperative assessment of parathyroid gland viability.

Provided is a configuration capable of executing a detection test for a comfort level including the quality of sleep, which is measurable at home without requiring the measurement of brain waves or electrocardiogram. The respiratory waveform of a subject during sleep is continuously measured and recorded from the respiratory gas flow, etc., and is window-Fourier transformed at each measurement time to generate a frequency spectrum, and a bandwidth including a respiratory frequency is extracted. The index indicating the regularity of the respiratory period of the subject is also calculated at each time point during the sleep, and the time-dependency of this index during the sleep is represented as a graph. A medical device includes a sleep evaluation system equipped with a control means for performing control so that a sleep cycle repeated at a cycle of about 90 minutes is clearly observed if the comfort level including the quality of sleep of the subject is favorable.

Wearable monitoring devices with passive and active filtering

A wearable device includes a housing with a window and an electronic module supported by the housing. The electronic module includes a photoplethysmography sensor, a motion sensor, and a signal processor that processes signals from the motion sensor and signals from the photoplethysmography sensor. The signal processor is configured to remove frequency bands from the photoplethysmography sensor signals that are outside of a range of interest using a band-pass filter to produce pre-conditioned signals, and to further process the pre-conditioned signals using the motion sensor signals to reduce motion artifacts from footsteps during subject running. The device includes non-air light transmissive material in optical communication with the photoplethysmography sensor and the window that serves as a light guide for the photoplethysmography sensor. The window optically exposes the photoplethysmography sensor to a body of a subject wearing the device via the non-air light transmissive material.
