The automatic welding method includes: carrying a pipe on which a true circle weld groove and settling the pipe at a fit-up position in the welding station and carrying a hollow connection member on which a true circle weld groove is formed to a position near the fit-up position in the welding station by using the material transport robot; measuring the alignment state of the hollow connection member with respect to the fit-up position by using a gap sensor robot, and according to the results, moving the position of the hollow connection member to align the weld groove of the pipe with the weld groove of the hollow connection member; performing a root welding on the aligned weld grooves by using a GT welding robot; and performing a filling and cap welding on the aligned weld grooves by using a GM welding robot to manufacture a 2D spool.

An apparatus and method of alloying a weld in an induction-kinetic welding of metal parts together includes heating substantially planar portions of two metal parts with an induction heating coil in between the planar portions. During at least a portion of the step of heating the planar portions, flowing a gas containing an alloying element in proximity to the planar portions. A chemical reaction results in an alloying element alloying the planar portions. The induction heating coil is withdrawn from in between the planar portions and the parts are forced into contact with each other in a kinetic energy welding process resulting in the metal parts being welded together. The welded parts have improved strength in the area of the weld. The welding process can be used to increase the presence of alloying transition metals and to improve the flowability and weldability during the kinetic phase before dilution of enriched carbon by shear accelerated diffusion.

A process for the continuous production of thin-walled, radially closed hollow profiles which are composed of nonferrous metals and have a small cross section comprises supply of a flat strip of the nonferrous metal to a forming apparatus (212) at a first supply speed, where the thickness of the strip corresponds to the wall thickness of the hollow profile. The forming apparatus (212) is configured for continuous forming of the flat strip supplied into a shape corresponding to the hollow profile. After forming, two opposite edges of the flat strip rest flush against one another in a contact region. A welding apparatus (216) continuously welds the edges which rest flush against one another by means of a laser which emits light having a wavelength of less than 600 nm. The laser heats a point in a welding region which has a diameter which is less than 20% of the cross-sectional dimension of the hollow profile. The welded hollow profile is taken off from the welding region, provided in a corrugator (225) with parallel or helical corrugation in sections and taken up in an uptake device (226).

A yaw rotary actuator rotates the second mounting portion about a yaw axis. A welding arm comprises a third mounting portion rotatably coupled to the second mounting portion of the supporting arm. A pitch rotary actuator rotates the third mounting portion about a pitch axis generally perpendicular to the yaw axis. A roll rotary actuator rotates a torch holder shaft about a roll axis generally perpendicular to the pitch axis. The shaft has a torch mounting portion for mounting a welding torch at an end thereof. A controller is operably coupled to the actuators to cause the welding torch to execute a welding pattern.
