Method for manufacturing multimode optical fibers
A method of manufacturing a multimode optical fiber includes specifying a peak wavelength λ.sub.P for the multimode optical fiber. The peak wavelength λ.sub.P corresponds to a wavelength at which the multimode optical fiber has a maximum bandwidth. The multimode optical fiber comprises a core and a cladding surrounding and directly adjacent to the core. The core has a radius r.sub.1 and a maximum relative refractive index Δ.sub.1,MAX>0. The cladding comprises a depressed-index region having a minimum relative refractive index Δ.sub.3,MIN<0 and a volume v. A draw tension T for the multimode optical fiber is selected based on a correlation relating peak wavelength λ.sub.P to draw tension T, the correlation comprising a correlation constant. The correlation constant K is a function of at least one of Δ.sub.1,MAX, r.sub.1, v, Δ.sub.3,MIN, and λ.sub.P. The multimode optical fiber is drawn from a preform at the draw tension T.
MULTIMODE OPTICAL FIBER CORE CANE CLASSIFICATION METHOD
Methods for classifying a core cane of an multimode optical fiber are disclosed. In embodiments, the method includes determining a relative refractive index profile Δ(r) of the core cane; fitting the relative refractive index profile Δ(r) to an alpha profile Δ.sub.fit(r) defined by:
where Δ.sub.o,fit is a relative refractive index at a longitudinal centerline of the core cane, α.sub.fit is a core shape parameter, and a.sub.fit is an outer radius of the core cane; generating a non-alpha residual profile Δ.sub.diff(r)=Δ(r)−Δ.sub.fit(r) for the core cane; computing one or more metrics from Δ.sub.diff(r), and using the one or metrics in a classification of the core cane, the classification comprising a prediction of whether a bandwidth at a pre-determined wavelength of an optical fiber drawn from a preform comprising the core cane exceeds a pre-determined bandwidth at the pre-determined wavelength.
METHODS OF MANUFACTURING WIDE-BAND MULTI-MODE OPTICAL FIBERS AND CORE PREFORMS FOR THE SAME
A method of making a multi-mode optical fiber that includes: depositing a porous germania-doped silica soot to form a germania-doped porous soot preform; depositing a porous silica layer over the porous soot preform; doping the porous soot preform and the porous silica layer with a fluorine dopant to form a co-doped soot preform having a core region and a fluorine-doped trench region; consolidating the co-doped soot preform to form a sintered glass, co-doped core preform having a refractive index alpha profile between 1.9 and 2.2 measured at 850 nm; depositing a cladding comprising silica over the sintered glass, co-doped preform to form a multi-mode optical fiber preform; drawing the optical fiber preform into a multi-mode optical fiber. Further, the step of doping the germania-doped soot preform and the porous silica layer is conducted according to a doping parameter (Φ) that is set between 20 and 300, and given by:

METHODS OF MAKING AN OPTICAL FIBER, AND OPTICAL FIBER
According to some embodiments a method of processing an optical fiber comprises the steps of: (i) drawing the fiber at a drawing rate of at least 30 m/sec; and (ii) cooling the drawn fiber in a gas at an average cooling rate less than 5000° C./s, such that said cooling reduces the temperature of the fiber from an entering temperature in the range between 1500° C. and 1700° C. to another temperature in the range between 1200° C. and 1400° C., the gas being at a temperature between 800° C. and 1500° C.; and the thermal conductivity κ of the gas being not greater than 1.5×10.sup.−4 cal/cm-s-K for at least one temperature within a range of 800° C. to 1500° C. at one atm (atmosphere) pressure absolute.
Optical fiber and manufacturing method thereof
An optical fiber includes a core, and a clad surrounding an outer circumference of the core, in which a first relative refractive index difference Δ1a is greater than 0, a second relative refractive index difference Δ1b is greater than 0, the first relative refractive index difference Δ1a is greater than the second relative refractive index difference Δ1b, the first relative refractive index difference Δ1a and the second relative refractive index difference Δ1b satisfy a relationship denoted by the following expression: 0.20≦(Δ1a−Δ1b)/Δ1a≦0.88, and a refractive index profile Δ of the core in an entire region of a section of 0≦r≦r1 as a function Δ(r) of a distance r from a center of the core in the radial direction is denoted by the following expression: Δ(r)=Δ1a−(Δ1a−Δ1b)r/r1.
Halogen co-doped optical fibers
A method of forming an optical fiber, including: exposing a soot core preform to a dopant gas at a pressure of from 1.5 atm to 40 atm, the soot core preform comprising silica, the dopant gas comprising a first halogen doping precursor and a second halogen doping precursor, the first halogen doping precursor doping the soot core preform with a first halogen dopant and the second halogen precursor doping the soot core preform with a second halogen dopant; and sintering the soot core preform to form a halogen-doped closed-pore body, the halogen-doped closed-pore body having a combined concentration of the first halogen dopant and the second halogen dopant of at least 2.0 wt %.
FIBER-BASED ANGULAR HOMOGENIZER
Angularly homogenizing gradient index optical fiber having a refractive index profile that is non-quadratic to a degree sufficient to enhance precession of light as it is propagated through the fiber. Deviation from the quadratic may be limited to avoid profoundly changing the radial boundary within the fiber. Beam asymmetry, for example, associated with small aperture sources launched into a fiber off axis, may be made more symmetric as the beam is propagated through the homogenizing gradient index optical fiber. A refractive index profile may be manufactured to avoid a pure quadratic profile, or a fiber having a refractive index profile that is quadratic in only some orientations about the fiber axis may be twisted during draw to induce a refractive index profile path that enhances propagation precession.
OPTICAL FIBER FOR DATA CENTERS
The disclosure provides optical fibers that exhibit low macrobend loss at 1550 nm at bend diameters between 10 mm and 40 mm. The relative refractive index profile of the fibers includes a trench cladding region with small depth, large width and a trench volume configured to minimize macrobend loss at large and small bend diameters. The optical fiber includes an outer cladding region that surrounds and is directly adjacent to the trench cladding region and an optional offset cladding region between the trench cladding region and the core region. In some embodiments, the trench cladding region has a relative refractive index that decreases monotonically from the inner radius to the outer radius. The monotonic decrease in relative refractive index may have a constant slope. The low macrobend loss at large and small diameters makes the optical fibers well suited for space-constrained deployment environments, such as data centers.
Multi-mode optical fiber and methods for manufacturing the same
Methods of manufacturing multi-mode optical fiber, and multi-mode optical fiber produced thereby, are disclosed. According to embodiments, a method for forming an optical fiber may include heating a multi-mode optical fiber preform and applying a draw tension to a root of the multi-mode optical fiber preform on a long axis of the multi-mode optical fiber preform thereby drawing a multi-mode optical fiber from the root of the multi-mode optical fiber preform. The draw tension may be modulated while the multi-mode optical fiber is drawn from the root of the multi-mode optical fiber preform. Modulating the draw tension introduces stress perturbations in the multi-mode optical fiber and corresponding refractive index perturbations in a core of the multi-mode optical fiber.
