An abrasive grain is disclosed and may include a body. The body may define a length (l), a height (h), and a width (w). In a particular aspect, the length is greater than or equal to the height and the height is greater than or equal to the width. Further, in a particular aspect, the body may include a primary aspect ratio defined by the ratio of length:height of at least about 2:1. The body may also include an upright orientation probability of at least about 50%.
METHOD FOR PRODUCING ABRASIVE PARTICLES
A method for producing abrasive particles includes the following method steps: i. preparing a starting mixture containing at least aluminium hydroxide, which mixture can be converted at least into aluminium oxide by means of heat treatment; ii. extruding the starting mixture to form an extrudate; iii. separating the extrudate into intermediate particles; and iv. heat-treating the intermediate particles. The intermediate particles are converted into abrasive particles that contain aluminium oxide, and the extrudate and/or the intermediate particles is/are subjected to an input of energy that is asymmetrical with respect to the geometry of the extrudate and/or the intermediate particles.
SHAPED ABRASIVE PARTICLES
A mold for making abrasive particles is presented. The mold includes a surface and a plurality of cavities extending downward from the surface. Each cavity includes a particle shape portion comprising a polygonal shape and a fracture portion coupled to the particle shape portion. The fracture portion is configured to break from the particle shape portion during a stress event, resulting in a fractured shape abrasive particle.
Magnetizable abrasive particle and method of making the same
Magnetizable abrasive particles are described comprising ceramic particles having outer surfaces comprising a coating of unsintered polyion and magnetic particles bonded to the polyion. In favored embodiments, the magnetic particles have a magnetic saturation of at least 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 or 50 emu/gram. In another embodiment, an abrasive article is described comprising a plurality of magnetizable abrasive particles as described herein retained in a binder material. Also described are method of making magnetizable abrasive particles and methods of making an abrasive article comprising magnetizable abrasive particles.
Bonded abrasive article including elongate shaped abrasive particles
A bonded abrasive article includes elongate shaped abrasive particles. The elongate shaped abrasive particles comprise an elongate shaped ceramic body having opposed first and second ends joined to each other by at least two longitudinal sidewalls. At least one of the at least two longitudinal sidewalls is concave along its length. At least one of the first and second ends is a fractured surface.
DEMETALLIZED SLAG FOR ABRASIVES AND/OR ROOFING GRANULES AND RELATED METHODS
Some methods for making a granular material comprise crushing demetallized slag particles with one or more crushers and screening the crushed demetallized slag particles with one or more screens to separate the demetallized slag particles into two or more fractions, the granular material comprising at least one of the fractions of the demetallized slag particles. Prior to the crushing, ones of the demetallized slag particles having a size that is less than or equal to 2 inches can account for at least 90% of the demetallized slag particles. An iron-compound content of the demetallized slag particles, by weight, can be less than or equal to 10%. Crushing and screening can be performed such that ones of the demetallized slag particles of the granular material having a size that is less than or equal to 1.25 mm account for at least 90% of the demetallized slag particles of the granular material.
Abrasive particles having complex shapes and methods of forming same
An abrasive grain is disclosed and may include a body. The body may include a central portion and 3 radial arms extending outwardly from the central portion along the entire length of the central portion of the body. A first radial arm, a second radial arm, and a third radial arm can define a total angle of less than 180 degrees. The body may also include at least one groove extending from a base surface along a first side of the body.
Abrasive grains on basis of eutectic alumina zirconia
Heat treated alumina zirconia abrasive grains based on Al.sub.2O.sub.3 and ZrO.sub.2 may be fused in an electric arc furnace, and may have a weight content of: Al.sub.2O.sub.3 between 52% and 62% by weight; ZrO.sub.2 and HfO.sub.2 between 35% and 45% by weight, with at least 6% by weight based on the total weight content of ZrO.sub.2 being present in the tetragonal and/or cubic high temperature modifications of ZrO.sub.2; Si-compounds between 0.2% and 0.7% by weight expressed as SiO.sub.2; carbon between 0.03% and 0.5% by weight; additives between 0.5% and 10% by weight; and raw-material-based impurities of less than 3% by weight.
