DAMPENING THE ACTUATION SPEED OF A DOWNHOLE TOOL
An actuator of a downhole tool used in oil and gas exploration and production operations is operable to actuate a first implement in a first direction. A biasing device of the downhole tool is operable to actuate the first implement in a second direction, opposite the first direction. A dampener of the downhole tool is operable to slow an actuation speed of the first implement in the first direction, the second direction, or both. Actuating the first implement in the first direction also actuates a second implement of a flow control device (“FCD”) of the downhole tool, to which the first implement is connected, in the first direction, placing the FCD in a first (e.g., open) configuration. Actuating the first implement in the second direction also actuates the second implement of the FCD in the second direction, placing the FCD in a second (e.g., closed) configuration.
DRILL ROD AND METHOD FOR RETROFITTING A KELLY BAR ARRANGEMENT
The invention relates to a drill rod for transferring a torque comprising an elongate rod base body, along which runs at least one base line for a fluid and/or electric current and/or data, an upper suspension device for suspending the drill rod from a support element, a rotary bearing, which is arranged between the suspension device and the rod base body, wherein the rod base body is mounted rotatably relative to the suspension device about a rod longitudinal axis, and a rotary feedthrough, through which a line connection is formed between at least one feed line, which is fixed relative to the support element, and the at least one base line of the rotatably-mounted rod base body. The invention is characterized here in that the rotary bearing is arranged axially distanced from the rotary feedthrough, and in that the rotary bearing comprises an axial bearing which is arranged above or below the rotary feedthrough. The invention furthermore relates to a drilling apparatus comprising such a drill rod and to a method for retrofitting an existing Kelly bar arrangement.
OSCILLATION REDUCTION TOOL AND METHOD
An oscillation reduction tool configured to prevent or reduce high frequency torsional oscillation by torsionally decoupling a rotary steerable system from a bottom hole assembly, which includes a drilling motor. The tool may convert high frequency torsional oscillation into an internal axial movement without axial displacement of the tool's outer housing. The oscillation reduction tool may flatten an amplitude of high frequency torsional oscillation spikes throughout a spring arrangement. The mechanical energy associated with the internal axial movement is reduced through an internal shock absorbing mechanism, such as fluid movement through a nozzle or annular space. The oscillation reduction tool functions to reduce high frequency torsional oscillation independent of the weight on the bit of the drill string.
APPARATUS FOR RECIPROCATION AND ROTATION OF A CONVEYANCE STRING IN A WELLBORE
A telescopic tool is located intermediate a conveyance string and permits an uphole portion to be manipulated through reciprocation and rotation regardless of the fixed nature of a downhole portion. In embodiments, tools uphole of telescopic joint can be actuated by casing manipulation to aid in placement of cement. In other embodiments, such as during running into the wellbore, the tool can be selectively actuated to cause the uphole casing string to lock to, and rotate, the casing string located downhole.
DOWNHOLE RATCHET MECHANISM AND METHOD
A downhole ratchet is utilized between tubulars in the drill string to reduce torsion energy in the drill string. A first gear and a second gear are biased into engagement to drive the drill string below the position of the downhole ratchet in the drill string during normal drilling. The downhole ratchet is constructed to release between the first gear and second gear when the tubular below the ratchet spins faster than the tubular above the ratchet due to slip-stick. Once the tubular below spins more slowly or at the same speed then the ratchet mechanism locks the upper and lower tubulars together to rotate the bit. The effect is to release torsional energy in the drill string to reduce slip stick oscillations.
Regulating Device and a Method of Using Same in a Borehole
A regulating device is for use in a drill string between a drilling machine and a drill bit. The regulating device has a tubular female portion which at least partly encloses a tubular male portion; a helical coupling between the female portion and the male portion to allow a telescoping movement of the regulating device in both directions between a fully extended position and a fully retracted position, the movement of the regulating device occurring when there is a difference in rotational speed between the female portion and the male portion; a first biasing device which is arranged to exert a driving force to drive the regulating device towards its extended position; and a second biasing device.
VIBRATION DAMPENER
A dampener device is configured for incorporation into a downhole measurement tool in a drilling system, for absorbing axial, lateral and torsional shocks and vibrations to protect measurement instrumentation located above the device during drilling. The device includes: a main sleeve having a main cavity containing a main spring; an adapter connected to or formed monolithically relative to the main sleeve, the adapter configured for connection to a first tool component; a plunger configured to compress the main spring; a connector configured for connection to a second tool component, the connector attached to or formed monolithically relative to the plunger; a shaft extending between the adapter and the connector, the shaft provided with an anti-rotation structure; and one or more passages leading from the outside of the device into the main cavity. The passages are provided to allow drilling fluid to enter the main cavity to act as vibration dampening fluid.
Self-Retractable Coiled Electrical Cable
A self-retracting coiled cable having a variable length along a center line can include an outer insulator sleeve having a longitudinal axis. The self-retracting coiled cable can also include a spring material extending along the longitudinal axis of the outer insulator sleeve. The spring material can hold the outer insulator sleeve in a helical shape around the center line. The spring material can also allow the self-retracting coiled cable to expand upon an application of an axial force to an end of the self-retracting coiled cable, thereby increasing a length of the self-retracting coiled cable, and to retract upon a removal of the axial force from the end of the self-retracting coiled cable, thereby reducing the length of the self-retracting coiled cable. The self-retracting coiled cable can further include multiple wires extending along the longitudinal axis of the outer insulator sleeve and disposed symmetrically around the spring material.
