An engine system includes an internal combustion engine having an engine block with one or more piston-cylinder arrangements communicating with an intake manifold and an exhaust manifold, a charge air passageway to the intake manifold, and an exhaust gas passageway that receives exhaust gas from the exhaust manifold. The engine system also includes one or more turbochargers each including a compressor to compress charge air and output the compressed charge air to the charge air passageway and a turbine that receives exhaust gas from the exhaust gas passageway and drives the compressor in response to the exhaust gas passing through the turbine. An air pump is positioned downstream of the compressor that supplies a portion of the compressed charge air into the exhaust gas passageway upstream of the turbine, such that the turbine receives both exhaust gas and compressed charge air.

Vehicle having a hybrid drive

A vehicle has a hybrid drive including an internal combustion engine and at least one electric motor. The hybrid drive has a charging device for generating an air flow. A charge air path guides the air flow from the charging device to the internal combustion engine. A charge air cooler is arranged in the charge air path between the charging device and the internal combustion engine. The hybrid drive has an electric battery for supplying electric power to the at least one electric motor. The effort involved in cooling the battery is reduced if the battery is incorporated into the charge air path between the charge air cooler and the internal combustion engine in such a way that the air flow can flow through and/or around it.

Methods and systems for catalytically treating exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine using secondary air injection, and secondary air pump for use therein

In a turbocharged internal combustion engine (ICE) system, a catalytic treatment device receives exhaust gases from the ICE after they have passed through the turbocharger turbine. The system includes a secondary air pump (SAP) for injecting pressurized air into the exhaust gases ahead of the catalytic treatment device. The SAP is a single-stage centrifugal compressor that includes an air recirculation passage for causing a first portion of the air pressurized by the SAP to be continuously recirculated back to the inlet of the SAP, which is effective for heating the air in the volute of the SAP. A second portion of the pressurized air, having thereby been heated, is injected into the exhaust gases proceeding toward the catalytic treatment device.

Method of operating a supercharged internal combustion engine

A method for operating a supercharged internal combustion engine. Before a cold start of the engine, an electric drive device of an electrically assisted exhaust-gas turbocharger of the engine is activated such that fresh air is compressed by a compressor of the turbocharger and, in the process, is heated and is conveyed via an open overrun air recirculation valve arranged downstream of the compressor, through a short circuit back to a suction side of the compressor of the turbocharger. A proportion of the air that is heated by way of the short-circuit operation of the compressor is, downstream of the compressor and upstream of a closed throttle flap of the engine, conducted via a secondary air system into an exhaust manifold and from there via a wastegate of the turbocharger into the catalytic converters of an exhaust-gas aftertreatment device of the engine.

Particle filter assembly for a motor vehicle, motor vehicle, and method for regenerating a particle filter

A particle filter assembly for a motor vehicle includes a particle filter, an exhaust-gas-conducting line which opens into the particle filter, and a secondary air supply. The secondary air supply is formed separately from the exhaust-gas-conducting line and fresh air is suppliable to the particle filter via the secondary air supply.

System and method using secondary air pump for secondary air injection into turbocharged internal combustion engine exhaust and for transiently augmenting engine boost pressure, including means for supressing surge of the secondary air pump

In a turbocharged internal combustion engine system including an eCompressor as a secondary air pump (SAP) for injecting air into an exhaust system of the ICE, controllable valves enable the turbocharger compressor and the SAP to provide two-stage compressed air to the intake of the ICE in certain operating conditions, or to feed the air via a secondary air injection line (SAI line) into the exhaust system in other conditions. A conduit is tapped off the discharge of the SAP and connects with discharge ducting from the turbocharger compressor, and an on/off valve configured for defined leakage in the “off” position controls flow through the conduit. When the air from the SAP is needed only for injection air, the leakage through the leaky valve into the intake system suppresses surge of the SAP.
