The cylinder bore wall includes a liner stop mechanism to locate a liner in the cylinder bore. The cylinder bore includes a mid-portion that spans between an upper end and a lower end, wherein the liner stop mechanism can be located near the upper end, near the lower end, or the mid-portion. The engine block has an outer cylinder block wall that is exterior to the cylinder bore wall. The outer cylinder block wall includes a first rib positioned above the liner stop mechanism and a second rib positioned below the liner stop mechanism relative to a cylindrical axis of the cylinder bore. The first and second ribs straddle the liner stop mechanism to reduce rotation and buckling of the liner during operation of the engine.

The cylinder liner may also include an annular recess adjacent the flange at a side closest to the bottom end of the body. The recess may have first and second axial ends, a substantially straight portion extending between the first and second axial ends, and at least one fillet formed at an intersection between the straight portion and at least one of the first and second axial ends. A roll-burnishing operation may be performed on the straight portion and the at least one fillet in a direction along the longitudinal axis.

A connecting wire connects the transmitter to the sensor, and is embedded in in the cylindrical liner body. The sensor is located in an upper portion of the cylindrical liner body and the transmitter is located directly below the sensor, such that the wire runs vertically. The transmitter can send information obtained by the sensor to a remote processor for calculating various operating states of the liner.
