OVERSPEED SAFEGUARDS IN HYDRAULICALLY CONTROLLED FUEL BOOST PUMP
20220381267 · 2022-12-01 ·

A hydraulic motor-driven fuel boost pump includes redundant safeguards against overspeeding the impellers. A flow limiter limits the amount of hydraulic fluid that can be supplied to the hydraulic motor, thereby limiting the torque that can be applied to the impellers. A control valve also transitions between a non-restrictive operating state and a restrictive operating state. In the restrictive operating state the control valve regulates the displacement of the swash plate when in the non-restrictive operating state. The control valve does not counter the bias of the swash plate control spring when in the restrictive operating state.

Fuel Pump Driven by a Variable Displacement Motor for Aerial Refueling Operation

A fuel pump system for an aerial refueling system including: a variable displacement motor operable to be driven by a hydraulic fluid pressure; a fuel pump operable to be driven by the variable displacement motor; and a drive system controller (DSC) connected to the variable displacement motor, wherein the DSC is operable to direct an operation of the fuel pump in modes comprising: a flow control mode operable to maintain an output fuel flow rate from the fuel pump to a predetermined maximum inlet pressure at a reception coupling for a receiver aircraft; a fuel pressure control mode operable to regulate the output fuel flow rate to not exceed the predetermined maximum inlet pressure; and a priority mode operable to reduce the output fuel flow rate in response to a decrease in the hydraulic pressure. Also a method of refueling a receiver aircraft.

A disclosed submersible pump apparatus includes a three-dimensional frame, a pump housing, a drive shaft, an impeller, and first and second motors. The impeller is mounted on the driveshaft within the pump housing and is driven by one or both of the motors. The first motor is connected to a first end of the drive shaft and the second motor connected a second end of the drive shaft. The first and second motors are hydraulic motors and in a first configuration, the first and second motors are configured to cooperatively rotate the drive shaft with hydraulic fluid supplied to and removed from the first and second motors using a parallel fluidic connection. In a second configuration, only one of the motors has a drive gear and drives the drive shaft while the second motor does not have a drive gear and acts as a frictionless bearing supporting the drive shaft.

The present invention provides a control system configured to reference a data structure, such as a look up table, to variably control fan speed based on ground speed of an agricultural machine, independent of engine speed of the machine, to achieve a given application rate for a field. In one aspect, the control system can control a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) solenoid to a pump causing a transfer of a given amount of fluid to achieve a correct fan speed according to the data structure. As a result, fan speeds can be prescribed for any application rate, such as a light application rate of 100 pounds per acre, with slowing the fan down, or a heavy application rate of 1000 pounds per acre, with speeding the fan up, all as a function of ground speed, while decoupled from engine speed.
