Sliding member

Disclosed herein is a sliding member having an alloy overlay layer that comes into sliding contact with a counterpart member thereof and has improved fatigue resistance. The sliding member comprises a base material layer and an alloy overlay layer formed on the base material layer, in which the alloy overlay layer has a soft metal phase made of tin and precipitated in a metallic matrix phase made of aluminum, and when an average aspect ratio of the soft metal phase is defined as A, and its standard deviation is defined as Aσ, A+Aσ is 3.0 or less. In this case, the soft metal phase has a shape close to a sphere without elongating in a certain direction.

Permeation barrier layer

A sealable volume has a wall forming at least a portion of a boundary limiting the volume. The wall includes a hydrogen permeation barrier including a layer system (LS) having at least one layer. The layer system includes at least one hydrogen barrier layer (HPBL) of an at least ternary oxide. Preferably, the oxide is substantially composed of Al, Cr and O and the hydrogen barrier layer (HPBL) is deposited using physical vapor deposition, in particular cathodic arc evaporation. Preferably, the layer system includes at least one of: an adhesion layer (AdhL), a hydrogen storage layer (HStL), a protective layer (ProtL), in particular a thermal barrier layer (ThBL), a diffusion barrier layer (DBL), an oxidation barrier layer (OxBL), a chemical barrier layer (ChBL), a wear resistance layer (WRL). Excellent hydrogen permeation barrier properties can be achieved, and the layer system can be tailored as required by an envisaged application.

The diamond-like carbon layer has a hardness equal to or less than 1000 HV and when subjected to infrared spectroscopy analysis, exhibits absorption wavenumbers of following wavenumbers (1) to (5) originating from different chemical bonding states: wavenumber (1): 2800-3100 cm.sup.−1, wavenumber (2): 1500-1800 cm.sup.−1, wavenumber (3): 1200-1500 cm.sup.−1, wavenumber (4): 3300-3600 cm.sup.−1, wavenumber (5): 730-930 cm.sup.−1. The relation (P1+P3)/(P1+P2+P3)≧0.50 is satisfied when an integrated value of absorption rate with respect to wavenumbers (1), (2), and (3) is represented as peak area values P1, P2, and P3, respectively.
