A method for improving the heating efficiency of steam wherein a polyamine represented by the following general formula (1) is caused to be present in a steam system to be used for heating. (1) wherein R.sup.1 represents a saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon group having 10 to 22 carbon atoms; m is an integer of 1 to 8, and n is an integer of 1 to 7; and when n is 2 or more, a plurality of NH—(CH.sub.2).sub.m may be identical or different.

An apparatus for drying materials is disclosed. The apparatus has a chamber which is heated to a temperature sufficient to vaporize the water in the material into steam. The dryer is configured to utilize the steam produced from the material to condition the material. The dryer has two exhaust stacks positioned at opposing ends of the dryer. The removal of exhaust steam at the two opposing ends of the dryer facilitates the migration of moisture within the chamber along a length of the dryer between the two ends. The exhaust stacks can be controlled and adjusted based on feedback from a plurality of pressure differential transmitters installed within the chamber. Methods for drying materials are also disclosed.

The method comprises introducing a material into a dryer chamber, creating steam from vaporizing moisture in the material by maintaining the chamber at a temperature, conditioning the material using the steam created from vaporing moisture in the material by conveying the material along a length of the chamber from an inlet end to an outlet end, exhausting steam near the inlet end of the chamber, exhausting steam near a dry-end exit end of the chamber, controlling a migration of moisture between the inlet and outlet ends by adjusting an exhaust flow rate near the inlet end of the chamber and/or an exhaust flow rate near the dry-end exit end of the chamber, and withdrawing the material from the chamber.

Disclosed is a slurry drying plant (1) comprising a slurry extruder (3) including a slurry inlet (2) and conveying means (4) arranged to convey the slurry through the slurry extruder (3) and force the slurry out of a plurality of exit openings (5) of the slurry extruder (3) to form a plurality of slurry strings (7), wherein the slurry strings (7) are forced out into a drying chamber (8) in which the plurality of slurry strings (7) is dried. The slurry drying plant (1) further comprises slurry heating means (6) comprising flow means for passing superheated steam past the slurry strings (7) in the drying chamber (8), and inlet pressure detection means (9) for detecting a slurry inlet pressure at the slurry inlet (2). The slurry drying plant (1) also comprises control means (17) arranged to control the conveying speed of the conveying means (4) in response to the slurry inlet pressure. Furthermore, a method for drying slurry and use of a slurry drying plant (1) is disclosed.
