Light-based shielding detection

Disclosed herein is a sunscreen detector for use with portable device, such as a mobile and/or wearable device. One variation of a sunscreen detector comprises an illumination system that is configured to illuminate a target skin area with ultraviolet and/or infrared spectrum light and a sensor system that is configured to detect the amount of ultraviolet and/or infrared spectrum light that is reflected from the target skin area. The sunscreen detector is configured to analyze the data collected by the sensor system to generate a notification to the user as to whether they should apply sunscreen.

DIFFUSE MULTI-REFLECTION OPTICAL DEVICE WITH LIGHT RE-DIRECTION FOR SPECTROMETER COLLECTION

Aspects relate to mechanisms for enhancing the coupling of scattered light from a sample under test into a spectrometer. An optical device can include a reflective surface positioned apart from the sample and configured to receive a first portion of scattered light from the sample and to redirect the first portion of the scattered light back to one or more discrete spots on the sample in a non-random manner to produce redirected scattered light from the sample. The spectrometer may then be configured to receive coupled light from the sample including at least a portion of the redirected scattered light.

A system for measuring hematocrit in a whole blood sample is provided. An absorbent substrate is adapted to receive a whole blood sample. At least one light source is positioned to illuminate the sample on the substrate at first and second wavelengths. The first and second wavelengths are different from each other. A spectral sensor is positioned to measure a first intensity and a second intensity of light diffusely reflected from the sample at the first and second wavelengths, respectively. The diffusely reflected first and second intensities of light are compared to reference values to generate first and second reflectance values. A controller, coupled to the spectral sensor, is configured to determine a first differential reflectance between the first and second reflectances. The hematocrit level of the sample is determined based on a first stored relationship between hematocrit and a differential reflectance corresponding to the first and second wavelengths.

Measuring arrangement for reflection measurement

The invention relates to a measuring arrangement for detecting an absolute reflection spectrum of a sample in a process for producing the sample. It comprises a light source for generating measurement light, a homogenizer for generating a uniform spatial illuminance distribution of the measurement light; a movable reflector and a receiver for collecting the measurement light reflected from the sample and/or the reflector. According to the invention, the reflector both for a reference measurement and for a sample measurement is positioned in an observation beam path and arranged on the same side of the sample as the light source in order to feed the reflected measurement light to the receiver.
