The present technology relates to a signal processing device, a signal processing method, and a program capable of improving noise resistance in high linear density recording.

Partial response (PR) equalization of a reproduced signal of multilevel codes of 3<=ML is performed and maximum likelihood decoding of an equalized signal obtained through the PR equalization is performed. The present technology can be applied to, for example, a recording/reproducing device or the like such as an optical disc.

Data storage device duplicating an ECC sub-block in downstream ECC super-block

A data storage device configured to access a magnetic tape is disclosed, wherein the data storage device comprises at least one head configured to access the magnetic tape. A first plurality of data blocks are encoded into a first plurality of ECC sub-blocks including a first ECC sub-block, and the first plurality of ECC sub-blocks are encoded into a first ECC super-block. The first ECC sub-block is written to the magnetic tape, and a write-verify of the first ECC sub-block is executed by reading the first ECC sub-block. When the write-verify passes, a second plurality of data blocks are encoded into a second ECC super-block, and when the write-verify fails, a third plurality of data blocks and the first ECC sub-block are encoded into the second ECC super-block, wherein the second ECC super-block is written to the magnetic tape.

Detecting shingled overwrite errors

Systems and methods are disclosed for detecting shingled overwrite errors. When a read error is encountered when reading from shingled recording tracks, a processor may determine whether the read error is an error caused by shingled overwriting. The processor may determine whether the read error is caused by shingled overwriting by determining read signal quality of one or more sectors preceding the read error, such as based on a bit error count or bit error ratio (BER), and comparing the read signal quality to a threshold value. The processor may determine that the read error is caused by shingled overwriting when the read signal quality value is lower than the threshold.

Systems and methods for logically organizing data for storage and recovery on a data storage medium using a multi-level format are described. Embodiments include systems and methods for protecting data stored on a data storage medium so that the data may be recovered without errors.

Multi-sector read offset recovery

An integrated circuit includes a read/write channel and a servo controller. The read/write channel is configured to: determine, in connection with a first path, respective read errors associated with N number of the data sectors; estimate respective offset positions of the N number of the data sectors; and generate a second path based, at least in part, on the respective estimated offset positions. The servo controller is configured to cause adjustment of a position of a read transducer based on the second path.

Read offset calibration for error recovery

A hard disk drive includes a magnetic recording medium comprising data sectors along a data track, a read head arranged to read data from the data sectors, and an integrated circuit. The integrated circuit includes circuitry programmed to detect a read error associated with a first of the data sectors and continue to read data from the data sectors after the detection of the read error.

Data timestamp and read counter for magnetic recording devices

The present disclosure generally relates to using a data timestamp and/or a read counter to prevent data from being re-read and signal that the data has been accessed. The write assist element in the write head can be utilized to degrade the data or an allocated marker after the data has been read. The degradation functions as a read counter to indicate how many times the data has been read. Additionally and/or alternatively, a timestamp can be utilized. The timestamp is updated each time that the data has been accessed. In so doing, it is possible to determine whether data in a data storage device has been accessed.

A method for providing enhanced readability of data written to a magnetic tape, includes the steps of (i) writing data to a first tape partition using a tape drive, the data being written under a first dimensional stability condition; (ii) monitoring an ambient dimensional stability condition with a condition monitor to determine if the ambient dimensional stability condition has moved at least a predetermined threshold value from the first dimensional stability condition toward a preferred dimensional stability condition; and (iii) replicating the data to a second tape partition with a data replicator when it has been determined that the ambient dimensional stability condition has moved at least the predetermined threshold value from the first dimensional stability condition toward the preferred dimensional stability condition.

Tape drive configured to enable magnetic media to fly above an upstream or a downstream head assembly

The present disclosure generally relates to a tape head and a tape drive including a tape head. The tape head comprises a first same gap verify (SGV) head assembly comprising a first media facing surface (MFS) and a plurality of first write transducer and first read transducer pairs, and a second SGV head assembly comprising a second MFS and a plurality of second write transducer and second read transducer pairs. During operation, when a tape or magnetic media moves in a first direction over the tape head, the tape contacts the second MFS and is spaced from the first MFS, and when the tape moves in a second direction opposite the first direction over the tape head, the tape contacts the first MFS and is spaced from the second MFS. As such, the tape contacts only one edge of either the first or second MFS during operation.
