An image reading apparatus which is capable of preventing occurrence of a paper jam and poor stacking during conveyance of originals. The image reading apparatus sets a type of an original, conveys the original based on the set type of the original, and reads an image on the conveyed original. An original detecting sensor detects placement of the original on an original tray. An LCD touch panel displays an object for setting a type of the original in response to the detection by the original detecting sensor.

A scanner includes a reading unit, a reversing unit, a discharge unit, a mounting portion, and a pressing portion. The discharge unit discharges a document that is reversed by the reversing unit. On the mounting portion, the document discharged by the discharge unit is mounted. The pressing portion presses the document toward the mounting portion. The pressing portion has a moving member that is provided and configured to move toward the mounting portion, and an elastic member that applies an elastic force to the moving member so that the moving member comes into contact with the document on the mounting portion.

An image forming system includes an image forming apparatus and an image reading apparatus. The image forming apparatus includes an image forming unit, a first pair of conveying rollers and a first motor driving the first pair of conveying rollers at a first speed. The image reading apparatus includes an image reading unit, a second pair of conveying rollers arranged downstream of said first pair of conveying rollers and a second motor driving the second pair of conveying rollers at a second speed lower than the first speed. The second motor drives the second pair of conveying rollers at the second speed so as to form a loop of the sheet between the first pair of conveying rollers and the second pair of conveying rollers.
