Embodiments of the present invention include a press base assembly, a strengthening ring for use with press bases and related methods. In one embodiment, a press base assembly includes a press base having a body that includes a piston cavity at one end. The body, at a second end opposite that of the piston cavity, may exhibit a desired geometry. A strengthening ring may be shaped, sized and configured to substantially mate with the geometry of the second end of the body and be placed thereover. For example, the geometry of the second end may be substantially circular exhibiting a particular diameter and circumference. The strengthening ring may have substantially circular internal surface sized and configured such that the strengthening ring is positioned on the second end of the body in a manner that results in an interference fit between the two components.

Various embodiments of high pressure presses and related methods of manufacturing and operating such presses are described. In one embodiment, a cubic press is described having press bases with spacers disposed between adjacent press bases. Sets of two or more tie bars are also disposed between adjacent press bases. The tie bars are placed in a state of compression while the spacers are placed in a state of compression. During operation, the press bases may become displaced relative to one another such that additional tension is experience by the tie bars while the amount of compression experienced by the spacer is reduced. The tie bars exhibit a relatively small cross-sectional area as compared to the cross-sectional area of the spacer.

Method for modifying surface of piston for internal combustion engine, and piston for internal combustion engine

There is provided a piston with a surface modified layer for an internal-combustion engine by a method using a particle to be ejected made of iron-based alloy having a diameter of 20 to 200 m, a thermal conductivity of 30 W/m.Math.k or less at 25 C., and a specific gravity of 7.5 g/cm.sup.3 or greater. The method includes: first treatment for ejecting the particle onto a surface of a piston made of aluminum-silicon alloy or aluminum-copper-based alloy in a space in which oxygen exists at arc height value of 0.07 to 0.13 mm (N), second treatment for ejecting the particle onto the surface of the piston in a space in which oxygen exists at arc height of 0.13 to 0.22 mm (N), and heating treatment applying to the piston for 1.5 hours or longer at 170 to 190 C. in a space in which oxygen exists.

Steel piston with filled gallery

A steel piston for an internal combustion including a cooling gallery containing a solid coolant, such as an aluminum-based material, is provided. The solid coolant has a thermal conductivity which is greater than the thermal conductivity of the steel material and fills at least 15 volume percent (vol. %) of the cooling gallery. The solid coolant provides for exceptional cooling along a crown of the piston, reduces corrosion and erosion along the crown, and avoids the problem of oil coking.
