    Abstract

    A backup-assisting device which assists in the backing up of a vehicle by providing one or more visual and auditory aids. The one or more visual and auditory aids include at least an image sensor such as digital video camera, one or more illuminating devices such as one or more lights, a sound-generating device such as speaker.

    Claims

    1. A backup-assisting device configured to be connected to an existing vehicle to assist in the backing up of the vehicle, wherein said backup-assisting device comprises: a housing, said housing having a front face and a mounting arrangement, said mounting arrangement configured to facilitate in attaching said housing to a rear of the vehicle; an image sensor, said image sensor configured to capture and/or record images, said image sensor at least partially located on said front face of said housing; an illuminating device, said illuminating device configured to generate light, said illuminating device at least partially located on said front face of said housing; a sound-generating device, said sound-generating device configured to generate sound, said sound-generating device at least partially located on said front face of said housing; and, control circuitry at least partially located in an interior of said housing, said control circuitry including an image hardware/software module, a light hardware/software module, a sound hardware/software module, and a communication interface, said image hardware/software module configured to receive and/or output data that represents one or more images captured and/or recorded by said image sensor, said light hardware/software module configured to activate and/or control said one or more illuminating devices, said sound hardware/software module configured to activate and/or control said sound-generating device, said communication interface configured to send and/or receive data between a remote display and 1) said image hardware/software module, 2) said light hardware/software module, and/or 3) said sound hardware/software module.

    2. The backup-assisting device as defined in claim 1, wherein said mounting arrangement includes a first mounting flange on a first side of said housing and a second mounting flange on a second side of said housing, said first mounting flange including one or more opening adapted to receive a bolt or screw or cord, said second mounting flange including one or more opening adapted to receive a bolt or screw or cord.

The backup-assisting device as defined in claim 1, wherein said illuminating device includes first and second sets of lights, said first set of lights including a plurality of lights, said second set of lights including a plurality of lights, at least a portion of said image sensor is located between said first and second sets of lights.

The backup-assisting device as defined in claim 2, wherein said illuminating device includes first and second sets of lights, said first set of lights including a plurality of lights, said second set of lights including a plurality of lights, at least a portion of said image sensor is located between said first and second sets of lights.

    5. The backup-assisting device as defined in claim 1, wherein said housing includes a removable back panel, said removable back panel providing access to a battery compartment in an interior of said housing.

    6. The backup-assisting device as defined in claim 4, wherein said housing includes a removable back panel, said removable back panel providing access to a battery compartment in an interior of said housing.

    7. The backup-assisting device as defined in claim 1, wherein said communication interface includes a wireless transmitter and wireless receiver to wirelessly transmit data to and receive data from said remote display.

    8. The backup-assisting device as defined in claim 6, wherein said communication interface includes a wireless transmitter and wireless receiver to wirelessly transmit data to and receive data from said remote display.

    9. A backup-assisting system configured to be connected to an existing vehicle to assist in the backing up of the vehicle, wherein said backup-assisting system comprises: a backup-assisting device comprising: a housing, said housing having a front face and a mounting arrangement, said mounting arrangement configured to facilitate in attaching said housing to a rear of the vehicle; an image sensor, said image sensor configured to capture and/or record images, said image sensor at least partially located on said front face of said housing; an illuminating device, said illuminating device configured to generate light, said illuminating device at least partially located on said front face of said housing; a sound-generating device, said sound-generating device configured to generate sound, said sound-generating device at least partially located on said front face of said housing; and, control circuitry at least partially located in an interior of said housing, said control circuitry including an image hardware/software module, a light hardware/software module, a sound hardware/software module, and a communication interface, said image hardware/software module configured to receive and/or output data that represents one or more images captured and/or recorded by said image sensor, said light hardware/software module configured to activate and/or control said one or more illuminating devices, said sound hardware/software module configured to activate and/or control said sound-generating device, said communication interface configured to send and/or receive data from 1) said image hardware/software module, 2) said light hardware/software module, and/or 3) said sound hardware/software module; and, an external device that is located remotely of said housing of said backup-assisting device, said external device including a display to display images that were captured and/or recorded by said image sensor of said backup-assisting device, said external device including communication circuitry configured to received data from and/or transmit data to said communication interface communication interface of said backup-assisting device.

    10. The backup-assisting system as defined in claim 9, wherein said external device is a device selected from the group consisting of a smart phone, a tablet, a laptop computer, an integrated display in the front dashboard of the vehicle, and a free standing display.

    11. The backup-assisting system as defined in claim 9, wherein said mounting arrangement includes a first mounting flange on a first side of said housing and a second mounting flange on a second side of said housing, said first mounting flange including one or more opening adapted to receive a bolt or screw or cord, said second mounting flange including one or more opening adapted to receive a bolt or screw or cord.

    12. The backup-assisting system as defined in claim 9, wherein said illuminating device includes first and second sets of lights, said first set of lights including a plurality of lights, said second set of lights including a plurality of lights, at least a portion of said image sensor is located between said first and second sets of lights.

    13. The backup-assisting system as defined in claim 9, wherein each of said communication interface and said external device include a separate wireless transmitter and wireless receiver to wirelessly transmit data to and receive data from said external device and said backup-assisting device.

    14. The backup-assisting system as defined in claim 9, wherein said control circuitry of said backup-assisting device is in communication with circuitry of the vehicle so that said control circuitry of said backup-assisting device is able to detect when said vehicle is moving in a reverse direction and/or has shifted into reverse gear, and wherein said control circuitry of said backup-assisting device is configured to activate said image sensor, said illuminating device, and/or said sound-generating device when said control circuitry of said backup-assisting device detects said vehicle moving in the reverse direction and/or has shifted into reverse gear.

    15. A method for assisting a user of a vehicle in the backing up of said vehicle, said method comprises: providing said vehicle, said vehicle having a rear portion providing a backup-assisting device, said backup-assisting device comprising: a housing, said housing having a front face and a mounting arrangement, said mounting arrangement configured to facilitate in attaching said housing to said rear portion of said vehicle; an image sensor, said image sensor configured to capture and/or record images, said image sensor at least partially located on said front face of said housing; an illuminating device, said illuminating device configured to generate light, said illuminating device at least partially located on said front face of said housing; a sound-generating device, said sound-generating device configured to generate sound, said sound-generating device at least partially located on said front face of said housing; and, control circuitry at least partially located in an interior of said housing, said control circuitry including an image hardware/software module, a light hardware/software module, a sound hardware/software module, and a communication interface, said image hardware/software module configured to receive and/or output data that represents one or more images captured and/or recorded by said image sensor, said light hardware/software module configured to activate and/or control said one or more illuminating devices, said sound hardware/software module configured to activate and/or control said sound-generating device, said communication interface configured to send and/or receive data from 1) said image hardware/software module, 2) said light hardware/software module, and/or 3) said sound hardware/software module; providing an external device that is located remotely of said housing of said backup-assisting device, said external device including a display that is configured to display images that were captured and/or recorded by said image sensor of said backup-assisting device, said external device including communication circuitry configured to received data from and/or transmit data to said communication interface communication interface of said backup-assisting device; connecting said housing of said backup-assisting device to said rear portion of said vehicle; activating said backup-assisting device prior to, during, or after said vehicle is moving in the reverse direction or has shifted into reverse gear, said activating said backup-assisting device causing a) activation of said image sensor, and optional activation of said illuminating device and/or said sound-generating device, and b) transmission of data from said image sensor to said external device; and, displaying images on said display of said external device that are viewable in real-time by a user of said vehicle after said step of activating said backup-assisting device while said user is operating said vehicle.

    16. The method as defined in claim 15, wherein said external device is a device selected from the group consisting of a smart phone, a tablet, a laptop computer, an integrated display in the front dashboard of the vehicle, and a free standing display.

    17. The method as defined in claim 15, wherein said illuminating device includes first and second sets of lights, said first set of lights including a plurality of lights, said second set of lights including a plurality of lights, at least a portion of said image sensor is located between said first and second sets of lights.

    18. The method as defined in claim 15, wherein each of said communication interface and said external device include a separate wireless transmitter and wireless receiver to wirelessly transmit data to and receive data from said external device and said backup-assisting device.

    19. The method as defined in claim 15, wherein said control circuitry of said backup-assisting device is in communication with control circuitry of the vehicle so that said control circuitry of said backup-assisting device is able to detect when said vehicle is moving in a reverse direction and/or has shifted into reverse gear, and wherein said control circuitry of said backup-assisting device is configured to activate said an image sensor, said illuminating device, and/or said sound-generating device when said control circuitry of said backup-assisting device detects said vehicle moving in the reverse direction and/or has shifted into reverse gear.

    20. The method as defined in claim 15, wherein said external device includes a microphone to enable said user to speak into said microphone and to broadcast such speech through said sound-generating device of said backup-assisting device.

The primary components of the backup-assisting device 100 include a housing 102, an image sensor 104 such as digital video camera, an illuminating device such as lights 106, 108, a sound-generating device 110 such as speaker, and a mounting arrangement 114. The housing 102 is adapted for attachment to an associated vehicle (e.g., car, truck, tractor, construction vehicles, lift vehicles, etc.), such as vehicle 200 schematically illustrated in FIG. 6.

    [0056] Each of the image sensor 104, illuminating device 106, 108, and sound-generating device 110 are at least partially enclosed within the housing 102. The functioning portions of image sensor 104, illuminating device 106, 108, and sound-generating device 110 (e.g., the image sensor, camera lens, light bulb, and speaker cone) are generally located on a front side 123 of the housing. The respective back and bottom sides 124, 128 of the housing 102 are substantially flat and form an approximate right angle at the point where the two sides meet; however, this is not required. The housing 102 of backup-assisting device 100 should generally be mounted to the vehicle such that the functioning portions of the image sensor 104, illuminating device 106, 108, and sound-generating device 110 face outward and away from the vehicle.

Moreover, while only a circular lens portion is illustrated to represent the image sensor 104, it should be understood that digital image sensors typically include a number of other known components which are not presently illustrated. For example, image sensors such as image sensor 104 generally include one or more types of sensors configured to convert light into an electrical signal. The specific type of bulbs making up first and second side light sets 106, 108 is non-limiting, but may include incandescent, halogen, fluorescent, compact fluorescent, high intensity discharge (HID), and other commonly known light bulb types.     [0059] The sound-generating device 110 is shown as being centrally disposed on the front side 123 of the housing 102 and located at a position generally under the image sensor 104; however, such an arrangement is non-limiting. The sound-generating device 110 can be any type of device known for converting electrical audio signals into a corresponding sound. In some embodiments, the sound-generating device 110 may be configured to provide a one-way or two-way intercom for communicating with a person or persons outside of the associated vehicle. The sound-generating device 110 may further include a grille 112 for protecting internal components while allowing sound to pass clearly therethrough. Optionally, the front side 123 of the housing 102 can include one or more slots that function as an alternative grill 112 for the sound-generating device 110.

When the backup-assisting device 100 of the present disclosure is mounted to the rear of the vehicle, the image sensor 104 (when activated) can capture images of the space and objects in the space which are located behind the vehicle and which would otherwise be blocked from the driver's view.

As can be appreciated, the housing 102 can be connected to other areas of the vehicle (e.g., front of vehicle, hood of vehicle, side of vehicle, etc.).

    [0066] Referring now to FIG. 6, a schematic block diagram of the backup-assisting device 100 and a schematic block diagram of the vehicle 200 are illustrated as being communicatively connected to one another. In addition, the housing 102 of backup-assisting device 100 is shown as being physically connected to a body portion 202 of the vehicle 200 by mounting arrangement 114, as discussed in further detail above.

The raw image files produced by the image hardware/software module 140 are output to and processed by an image processor 142. The image processor 142 is configured to crop or resize original images, adjust color and improve image quality, and eliminate visual artifacts.

Such signals, when received by a mating or corresponding transceiver, are demodulated and recovered in the corresponding transceiver-receiving device. As can be appreciated, the communication interface 138 can also or alternatively be configured to transmit and/or receive data via a wire connection.

    [0071] The communication interface 138, image hardware/software module 140, image processor 142, light hardware/software module 144, and sound hardware/software module 146 are controlled by CPU 132. Such dedicated display can optionally be part of a built-in navigation system of a vehicle or can be a separate display that has been mounted (permanently mounted or temporarily mounted) to the dashboard of an existing vehicle. The dedicated display and/or smart device may also include one or more buttons and/or touch-screen buttons to control other aspects of the backup-assisting device 100 (e.g., turn backup-assisting device on/off, increase illumination of first and/or second side light sets, change color of first and/or second side light sets, activate flashing of first and/or second side light sets, turn on/off first and/or second side light sets, increase/decrease rate of flashing of first and/or second side light sets, store images from image sensor, delete images from image sensor, zoom in/out images from image sensor, move image sensor to see different angles, reduce/increase image size displayed on dedicated display, crop images, play backed-up/stored images, change time, change date, cause images to be time/date stamped, control volume of sound-generating device, control sound frequency of sound-generating device, turn off/on sound-generating device, control the type of sound produced by the sound-generating device, etc.). As can be appreciated, the dedicated display can be substituted for a smart device (e.g., smart phone, tablet, laptop computer, smart watch, etc.). The smart device can be temporarily mounted in the vehicle, placed on the seat next to the user of the vehicle or in some other location such that the user can view the display on the smart device while also operating the vehicle. The external computing devices 300, such as smart device or display 302 can include circuitry that is the same or similar to circuitry 130 and 230. When a smart device is used, the circuitry in the smart device can optionally include GPS devices, voice command devices, motion sensors, and/or other types of components that are available in smart phones (e.g., Galaxy S20+, iPhone 11 XS, Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus, OnePlus 8 Pro, etc.).

    [0072] The communication interface 138 may optionally send and receive data over a network 156 which can be implemented through, for example, a wireless network such as a wireless local area network (WLAN). Optionally, the communication interface 138 may alternatively send and receive data over physical wiring 160. The wired or wireless signal from the backup-assisting device 100 can be directly transmitted to the one or more external computing devices 300, such as a smart device or dedicated display 302. If circuitry 230 is used, it can be partially or fully included in the one or more external computing devices 300.
