According to one embodiment, an image forming apparatus includes a conveying roller to convey sheets of different types along a conveyance path, a first sensor to detect a sheet being conveyed at a first position, a second sensor to detect the sheet being conveyed at a second position that is at a fixed distance downstream of the first position, a registration roller pair that is downstream of the second sensor, and a control unit. The control unit calculates a transit time for the sheet between the first position and the second position according detection results from the first and second sensors, and then sets a conveying distance for the sheet after the second position to be used for aligning the sheet against the registration roller pair based on the calculated transit time of the sheet.

A medium transportation device includes a supply roller configured to send a medium downstream, at least one stopper configured to be switched between a blocking state in which the at least one stopper blocks the transportation path and an open state in which the at least one stopper opens the transportation path, and a controller configured to perform skew correction control in which a leading edge of the medium is brought in contact with the at least one stopper in the blocking state to correct skew of the medium. The controller is configured to obtain information about a stiffness of the medium and, when a second medium having a lower stiffness than a first medium is transported, the controller switches the at least one stopper from the blocking state to the open state to end the skew correction control earlier than the skew correction control of the first medium.

An image forming device includes: a print engine to form an image on a medium, a sensor to irradiate light onto the medium and to detect an amount of light transmitted through the medium, and a processor to control the print engine based on the detected transmitted light amount and temperature data.

An image formation apparatus includes: an image former that forms an image on a recording medium delivered along a predetermined delivery path; a first hardware processor that judges whether or not the recording medium is an envelope; a second hardware processor that acquires a basis weight of the envelope; a third hardware processor that determines, in case the first hardware processor judges that the recording medium is the envelope, control for forming an image on the envelope by the image former on the basis of the basis weight of the envelope acquired by the second hardware processor.

An image forming apparatus includes a recording medium accommodation portion that accommodates a recording medium, a storage portion that stores information about the recording medium that is accommodated in the recording medium accommodation portion and previously printed, a sensing portion that senses opening and closing of the recording medium accommodation portion, a comparison portion that compares currently set setting information about the recording medium with the information about the recording medium stored in the storage portion on a condition that the sensing portion senses that the recording medium accommodation portion is not open between previous printing and current printing, and an output portion that outputs a comparison result of the comparison portion.

An identification system can facilitate accurate identification of a sheet by (i) vacating one or more components of the system that are not the sheet from a zone of detection, and/or (ii) determining a reference axis of the sheet. An isolation system can facilitate accurate isolation of a sheet by (i) providing targeted air flow, and/or (ii) introducing a wave into the sheet. Identification systems and/or isolation systems described herein may facilitate isolation of sheets that were previously fastened together by one or more fasteners. An alignment system can facilitate accurate alignment of a first sheet at an upstream location relative to a second sheet at a downstream location via machine learning.

A medium conveying apparatus includes a conveying roller to convey a medium, a first unit, a second unit located to face the first unit, an imaging sensor provided in the first unit, to image the medium conveyed by the conveying roller, a reference member including a facing surface, and provided in the second unit in such a way that the facing surface is rotatable between a facing position at which the facing surface faces the imaging sensor, and a non-facing position at which the facing surface deviates from the facing position, a guide portion to slidably guide the second unit in a direction perpendicular to a medium conveying surface so that the second unit moves in the direction perpendicular to the medium conveying surface, and a support portion to rotatably support the reference member. The support portion is located inside the guide portion.

An image reading apparatus which is capable of preventing occurrence of a paper jam and poor stacking during conveyance of originals. The image reading apparatus sets a type of an original, conveys the original based on the set type of the original, and reads an image on the conveyed original. An original detecting sensor detects placement of the original on an original tray. An LCD touch panel displays an object for setting a type of the original in response to the detection by the original detecting sensor.

An image forming apparatus includes processing circuitry and an image forming device. The processing circuitry is configured to acquire characteristic information of a recording medium measured, and apply a preset calculation criterion to the characteristic information to calculate an image forming condition. The image forming device is configured to form an image on the recording medium based on the image forming condition calculated by the processing circuitry.

An image forming apparatus is configured to obtain user designation information indicating a type of a sheet onto which an image is to be formed, control an image forming unit to form the image on the sheet in a case where a condition for permitting image formation is satisfied, even when a detecting result from a sensor indicates a type different from the type indicated by the user designation information, and control the image forming unit to skip forming the image on the sheet in a case where the condition is not satisfied, in a case where the detecting result from the sensor indicates a type different from the type indicated by the user designation information.
